Episode 65
January 30, 2025

Beginning with the alto sax of Jackie McLean we roll into brand new Djrum and a beautiful modern classical piece complete with delicate breakbeats. The conceptual ambient of Matthew Bourne’s MINING follows, into new drone from one the sound’s masters – bvdub.

There’s brand new DJ Koze, followed by David Lynch, on the microphone. From there we step into some industrial dancehall, and the fantastic solo material of TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe before getting deep into some afrobeat with Fela Kuti and none other than Ginger Baker. That one is a proper wiggle flex.

You’ve jazz fusion from Chick Corea. Squelchy acid from Texas and Xander Harris and uplifting synth drives of Ireland’s The Last Sound before a series of bangers. Starting with FKA Twigs into Destroy Boys, Viagra Boys, and classic Public Enemy.

We wind down with a cover of Horace Andy’s Skylarking. Doagh’s Cornerstone Boys. Something from that brand new Mogwai LP. The xx. And go back to the early 90s to close with the French hip hop of Soon E MC and the Rufige Kru of one of Goldie’s seminal anthems, recently remastered.

And there you have it.

Each week Mx Darkfloor soundtracks your morning, setting you up for the day. Drawing on many styles and genres. From deep drone, ambient, and dub, through to jazz, grunge, jungle, and breaks. There’s side quests into downtempo, trip-hop, and hip-hop. As well as approachable experimental sound, African rhythms, and Asian beats. To folk, no wave, shoegaze, psych, and fuzzy sludge.

The takeaway is you never know what they’ll play, but it’ll be day friendly, good music.
