episode 127
Our broadcast today starts with something new from Norwegian-Mexican artist Carmen Villain who’ll be releasing a new record in September. Her dubbed electronic sound lead us into the ambient sound of Dutch cellist Maarten Vos and pianist Nils Davidse. A wonderful dub cut by Al Wootton. And an early recording from Machester’s post-punk-funk band A Certain Ratio.

I play the new single from Djrum. The lush blues rock of Mark Lanegan. And, a cut from The Stooges’ 3rd record Raw Power. I’ve another new track from The Bug – this time featuring vocalist Dis Fig. It also marks the beginning of a new series from the Berlin based producer.

We travel to France for some 90s era Soon E MC. The new track from Peter Gabriel. Lyrics Born and his smooooooooth voice. Before we get all up into a Beastie Boys classic.

You’ve two 70s tracks in succession, firstly from Northern Ireland’s The Undertones, and secondly from California’s Doobie Brothers. There’s something new from Blue Note, and saxophonist Charles Lloyd, with recordings made with tabla master Zakir Hussian and drummer Eric Harland.

The beautiful voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan meets the gentle guitar of Michael Brook. There’s something from the French composter Bernard Parmegiana, that leads me into Janet Jackson. Before another legend, Madonna, and a track from her brand new record.

There’s italo disco, actually made by Italians. The soul funk of Willie Hutch. And the EBM stomp of two anthems. The first by Front 242, and the second by the Swiss group Grauzone.

A bit of Fugazi, before closing on one of the best belters of the 1980s by Bonnie Tyler, who we learnt whilst on air, passed away, on Wednesday.

Each week Mx Darkfloor soundtracks your morning, setting you up for the day. Drawing on many styles and genres. From deep drone, ambient, and dub, through to jazz, grunge, jungle, and breaks. There’s side quests into downtempo, trip-hop, and hip-hop. As well as approachable experimental sound, African rhythms, and Asian beats. To folk, no wave, shoegaze, psych, and fuzzy sludge.

The takeaway is you never know what they’ll play, but it’ll be day friendly, good music.
