Albert Van Abbe – Sugar Lobby Series

Set free from his own label No Comment, Albert Van Abbe (after collaborations with Gerald Donald and Sleeparchive) stretches his wings with three practically anonymous tracks for Belgium’s Curle Recordings.

9191 starts off pretty minimally. A two note bassline, single hat and kick exist alone under a faint static edge, before simple claps herald the arrival of a strangely structured set of chords and a head-down, propulsive rhythm.

The moodier 9090 bass swells and an echoed ethnic drum slap combines with another simple bassline, practically giving a contact high on listening.

While 9390 adds spacier chords and a more sloping rhythm, pushing the shoulders from side to side. In addition, Kangding Ray turns in a perfect example of the big room techno he’s known for. Simple 4/4 under a delayed, dubby vibe and what sound like melodicas struggling to break through. Cracking work, and a name I’ll be looking out for in future.
