Gary Beck – Algoreal / Naphtha on Soma Records

This new release from Glasgow’s Gary Beck has really grown on me. The track titled Algoreal / Naphtha saw release yesterday on Scotland’s Soma Recordings.

I’ve been aware of Beck’s work for the past few years and for me it’s often been functional dancefloor flare, nestled between deep techno and listenable and acceptable tech house. Occasionally a track feels a bit more to my taste but mostly I’ve not paid the producer much attention. Nothing really grabbed me. However, Algoreal / Naphtha is a very tidy techno effort with deeper leanings.

Track 1 is the 12″ Version of Algoreal; a seductive progressive rolling techno padded number where his obvious ample abilities in the studio can be heard on full display. It’s good, yes. It sucks you into it and dare I use this term in 2012, it has an undercurrent of restrained euphoria; never tripping over the edge face first into it but teetering. A skilled DJ would work his floor into a frenzy building with this, with a big switch cue’d up and ready.

The best is yet to come, in the form of Naphtha. From the first few seconds of that beat you know we’re into something much more to our palette. Dark and disconsolate with a rumbling bassline; it’s that snaking percussion gravel dusted as it is, that festers in and out of the darkness, moving between the stereo channels as it goes. Mr Beck. More like this please.
