Randal Collier-Ford on Kalpamantra
The ever reliable dark ambient dons at Kalpamantra have a new one out from label mainstay Randal Collier-Ford.
For the last 3 years, US musician Collier-Ford has been recording electronic music, soundscapes and as he puts it rather aptly – ritual manifestations.
His latest work translates from the Indo-Aryan language Marathi as Our Gods Never Sleep.
Across the seven tracks that form the album, Collier-Ford blends shadow enriched soundscapes and slow but moving dronal tone to create a listening experience rich in texture and construction. The result of which is that the tracks play out like chapters. A lot of dark ambient sound can be lacking structure, presence and focus; often pleasant enough but ultimately feeling very empty. Not so with Collier-Ford’s Our Gods Never Sleep – his pieces develop, evolve, bloom and die. There’s movement in the pieces too, holding the attention of my ears throughout – particularly in Birth of the Machines and Blocking Out The Sun.
