My guest today is Hamburg’s John Eckhardt.
A classical and jazz double bass player as well as composer and producer. His is a rich musical journey over the last 3 decades. One that’s seen him perform with some heavyweights along the way, including Peter Brötzmann. Fatwires is John’s experimental dub focused project.
A project that recently has seen him collaborate with the Japanese musician Atsushi Izumi – together the pair explored hypnotic percussion, heavy low end, and slabs of noise. Izumi produces drum & bass under the name Anode.
Their workflow was sparked spontaneously by a set of bass guitar soundscapes and bass lines sent by John to Atsushi. Over two years their ideas unfolded into a vast territory of organic industrialism in the orbit between Osaka and Hamburg.
The result was two EPs — 2024’s Kisen Kongou, and last year’s Kyukan. With an expanded CD edition that released in October.
John’s session for us today showcases those EPs, and that sound.
