As all good things must, Breaking Bad has come to an end. The AMC show did everything right as far as I’m concerned. The writing, acting, pacing, and the beautiful way it was shot were perfect but what I’d like to pay particular homage to is Dave Porter‘s amazing score. He expertly mixed elements from the shows foley sound with his own designed electronic sounds and sampled ethnic and ‘unusual’ instruments. The resulting soundbeds, beats and snippets of melody are astounding within the context of the show but also stand up to repeat listening. Here are a couple of my favourite cues:
Breaking Bad (Original Score) Vol. 1 is available digitally on iTunes and on CD from Amazon (US). Vol. 2 has just been released on iTunes, an Amazon CD release will follow.
Speaking of twisted, post-industrial soundscapes and beats… Roly Porter has a new album out on October 7th. You can stream Life Cycle Of A Massive Star in full here. It’s based on the concept the title suggests and sounds as epic as you’d expect for such lofty subject matter.
One of my go-to remixers – Adrian Carter – has a new release out entitled Night Runner. It’s made up of remixes and variants of tracks from his previous EP; the house-leaning Distance Runner.
Another of my go-to remixers – Production Unit – begins a new monthly radio show on Future Music FM this Thursday (8-10pm). The Broken120 show will be hosted by Production Unit and TVO, co-founders of the Broken20 record label.
In other Broken20 news, regular Brighton night of otherly electronics The Outer Church goes missionary this month; taking the OC gospel beyond borders, to Scotland. Broken3 (TVO, Production Unit & Erstlaub) will play sets alongside Black Mountain Transmitter and Embla Quickbeam. All three acts will play Edinburgh (25th Oct) and Glasgow (26th Oct).
I’ll leave you with Broken3’s collaborative track 96D from The Outer Church CD compilation.
