and there was me, too embarrassed to say I'd just watched grand torrino! which i really liked, by the way, although not quite sure if the ending was right, and thinking how much more grim and 'human' it would have been if it had been British

Didn't they do a Brit version thou? I haven't seen it, but that's the impression I get of Harry Brown with Michael Caine.

Not seen Gran Tourino myself yet. Keep meaning too.

Watched Metropolis this evening. First time I've seen it all the way through. Bloody excellent and it was released in 1927 which is hard to imagine but there we go.

Just watched Aguirre,Wrath of God by Werner Herzog starring legendary madman Klaus Kinski.
Amazing direction, cast and soundtrack, incredible it was made in1972
It was a huge influence on Apocalypse Now,and probably Cannibal Holocaust and Apocalypto

It can definitely be classed as epic. The scale of it. Feels timeless.

and hugely influential. I've seen one or two other Lang films but this one is defo the most striking and interesting today.

Watched Restrepo last night - pretty much what I expected but none the worse for that: visceral seat of your trousers war documentary. I'm glad I'm not a soldier.

I remember my dad taking me to see this when I when it came out,I was kind of obsessed with the main evil robot Maximillian.Rewatched it last night and was blown away. Its a proper scifi epic with references to Dantes Inferno and some pretty out there concepts for a Disney film.Seriously doom laden soundtrack that I still got on vinyl somewhere bought in Woolworths in 79.

I watched 'Drive' the the new Nicholas W.Refn film the other day and it was poss one of the worst most vapid films i seen.Awful music, pretentious acting and script. Not sure if I fell asleep or just went into a protective catatonic state before the end but presume it ended as shittily as it started.

also saw Red State the new Kevin Smith film that was more interesting but still annoying in a way that I cant quite put my finger on.

On the other hand 'My son ,my son what have ye done?'(herzog) is awesome.

I really liked Drive. It was pretty vapid and bleak in some ways but I'm a sucker for style over substance some times.

Anyone seen Primer here? Proper head fuck sci fi/time travelling sleeper film.

yo,sorry my grumbling about Drive wasnt in response to your post about it above,I just annoyed that (like most modern recycling of classic genres) the look is there but the soul is absent.I mean all the way thru Drive I was thinking about how great Taxi Driver is,and how the gap between the two films illustrates everything that I think is wrong with the world and how I should get out moreSmile

yeah Primer is brilliantly confusing.

On a tangent whilst trawling IMDb I came across 'The Legend of Boggy Creek' and had a cold shiver down my spine.
In the early '80s BBC2 used to show a Monster movie at about 6pm once a week,Godzilla,King Kong,Mighty Joe Young etc.
Well one night they showed 'Boggy Creek' and it absolutley terrified me and my mates.Reading the comments on IMDb it seems that a few other people had the same experience.
Looking back at it you can see its influence on loads of stuff,it is drive-in trash but def worth a watch on a dark night.
stream or d/l here
