“Within the UK any Midlands-residing purveyor of electronic music will endlessly extol the virtues of nights like Atomic Jam and House of God. After all, what better way to cut your teeth and gain inspiration by checking the likes of Neil Landstrumm and Surgeon on a regular basis? Add to this a more ‘localised’ free party scene and it becomes clear as day why Teutonic Kaboom does what she does.

Descriptive analysis of anyone’s compositions is always subject to opinion. Rude, bass-heavy manoeuvres oscillating somewhere between electro, 2-step and breakbeat is a pretty safe bet. Just check the labels on an ever-growing discography: Data-Trace, Bass Gun, Wide, Digital Distortions, some of the most respected, forward thinking electronic labels around.

And when someone cites the likes of Rag and Bone, Monolake and Trent Reznor as inspiration, you know they’re worth a listen. It’s a no-brainer. Whilst a full page of influences alone could be added, it’s safe to say that everyone from the likes of Dave Clarke, Speedy J through to Depeche Mode have all left their mark.

As one of the founding members of the Electrode crew, you can catch Charl on a regular basis either at their Manchester parties, or up and down the country at some of the most-respected nights around. “Breaks, electro, techno, ghettotech, wonk. For me it’s all about the party”. Damn right.

This mix, recorded back on May 20th this year is comprised of Orphx‘s work and should serve as a wonderful introduction into their sound. (mix after the jump)

For over fifteen years, Orphx has been creating and exploring a grey area between minimal techno, noise, and electro-acoustic music. Using an assortment of synthesizers, samplers, feedback systems, and various homemade instruments, Orphx draws upon the darker fringes of techno, electro and dub, combining these elements with the experimental aesthetics of early industrial music.

The project began in 1993 as a trio consisting of artists Richard Oddie, Christina Sealey and Aron West. Early recordings and live performances used primitive equipment to produce psychedelic noisescapes. West left the group in 1995 to focus attention on noise project Tropism with collaborator Johnny Dark, while Oddie and Sealey began incorporating more rhythmic structural elements into Orphx.

Orphx has since gained a substantial international following as one of the pioneering acts within the European “rhythmic noise” scene, while making increasingly strong connections with like-minded artists on the experimental fringes of techno and electro. Oddie and Sealey have performed in numerous countries around the world, appearing alongside artists such as Alva Noto, Byetone, Hakim Bey, Esplendor Geometrico, Funkstorung, Istvan Kantor, Pan Sonic, Polmo Polpo, Venetian Snares, Vromb and many others. Oddie and Sealey have also collaborated on numerous audio/visual projects and exhibitions related to their musical output.

Orphx has released a number of influential albums and singles since the mid 1990s, combining elements of techno with power electronics (Fragmentation, 1996; Vita Mediativa, 1998) and electro-acoustic soundscapes inspired by “acoustic ecology” (The Living Tissue, 2001; Other Voices, 2002). More recent releases combine all of these approaches into new hybrids of synthetic / organic sound (Circuitbreaking, 2004; Insurgent Flows, 2005, Teletai 2008). The Division 12″ on Sonic Groove (2009) marks a new phase for the project, developing their unique sound and further blurring the boundaries between techno, industrial and dub.

Being Friday it’s time for a rave/old skool inspired style mix. And what better mix that an old skool hip hop mix put together by Dead Sound. Even better for those of you in the UK, it’s a bank holiday, so you get an extra day of weekend and a 4 day week to follow. Good times.

This mix isn’t just rammed with some of the illest old skool hip hop joints, Dead Sound also lets loose with some understated scratching and turntablism. And why the hell not. So sit back, turn the amp up to 11 and get down with the heavy vibes ebbing outta this mix.

Growing up in Greater London meant that the whole rude bwoy/shite garage scene was huge when I was in my early teens. I grew up not that far from Staines/Slough so you can appreciate what my understanding of garage is. Still I’m fairly open minded and have heard some great garage tracks since (from the likes or Oris Jay, El-B, Zed Bias etc…). I think that most of what I have since grown to hate was the speed garage rubbish combined with Craig David and the ilk.

Anyways, enough of my past. To Watoo‘s mix which in his own words:

Recorded about 2 years ago it’s probably the finest mix I’ve ever done and is blatantly reppin the Future Garage sound before the term had been coined (or at least before I heard it).

Watoo is the founding member of the Redub collective, a 5 man group.

Your average dance booking involves an individual: a disc jockey and his or her record box…er…obviously. Your average rock booking involves a band of like-minded interacting musicians and their influences…apparently. Two seemingly completely different approaches to the purveyance of musical pleasure. Welcome to the sound of ReDub: a band of DJs offering a cohesive group presentation of cutting edge dance music that’s already making waves on internet radio, and with a collective wealth of experience of rocking conventional clubs and free parties.

A new artist with the UK Trends crew, of which the supplied bio couldn’t put it better.

In the days of desperate genre hopping to find the definitive ‘next big thing’ Koncode has bucked the trend and stubbed out his bass cigar on the eyeballs of the industry…..

Rather than chase scenes and suck off pretentious pricks he has just made f**ked music which is unique, unclassifiable and uncompromising.

The tracks are instantly mixable within a number of genres and encourages the cross pollination of disparate sounds which Koncode actively promotes (he did after all famously mix the Vengaboyz into Squarepusher live on the mighty Sub FM!). His sounds take influence from all over the spectrum but a signature warped, triplet, bass heavy sound has been characterised on the few dubplates which have surfaced in 2010.

His first action as a UK Trends artist is to do an astounding 60 minute genre-hopping mix taking in Fidget, dubstep, plonky, glitch-hop, bleepcore, future garage and whatever other genres your mum and dad don’t approve of this week… it however does NOT include the Vengaboys!

Really get on this one guys. Hearing The Bells as Erik XVI presents it is just wonderful.

In a parallel dimension not often intruded upon by the living, the sounds to which we dance took a decidedly different turn around the time of the latest millennium change. In this twilight world at the 90th parallel, the custodians of the 90 drums beat out their steadfast but languid rhythm at an ever-decreasing pace year after year. Ghostly apparitions flicker in the dusk and mysterious semblances shimmer in the cold, entranced by disembodied choirs of haunted voices singing in the distance.

As the dance progresses, the plaintive hymn to the machines gradually escalates into a preparation for battle, as the holy technocrats push their sacred machines to ever more intense configurations of desire. The cascading shards of ice that envelop this polar scene give rise to magnificent and otherworldly echoing tones, but sadly also contribute to the terminal decay of the ancient technology favoured by the undead to create their hypnotic sounds.

Intrepid explorer Erik XVI gained unprecedented access to the fading splendour of this parallel future, and succeeded in bringing back this unique audio artefact, a field recording of what happened to the music we call techno in an alternative universe.

Highly recommended listening with a top form set recorded live at Orlando in Dubrovnik last weekend.

Born in Zagreb, Croatia in 1981, Fromm has always shown a keen interest in the Arts. Introduced to electronic music in the late ’90s, he immediately became interested in doing something of his own. Soon afterwards, he enrolled in the Zagreb film school and is now working as a professional film and TV editor. Listening to a wide range of music styles from earliest electronica to today, it’s interesting to see him translate those filmmaking skills to music.

Bill Vega & New Decade have been involved with Dance music since 1991. Their Essex based label ‘Out Of Romford’ was set up at the height of the rave scene in early 1992 and was responsible for massive rave anthems such as ‘Get The Message’, ‘Wonderful Experiences’ and early tracks from Andy C as Desired State.

They were both heavily involved with the explosion of pirate radio in the early 90’s helping run Essex/London stations such as Shakedown FM, and with Bill Vega (then DJ Infinity) appearing on infamous London pirates in the development of Drum & Bass such as Weekend Rush & Eruption… (more)

DJ Skirt was born in Texas, but she has been living in Birmingham, UK for the last decade. She has been a music lover all her life, with early roots in industrial music which lead her to techno. She bought her turntables in 1998 and was DJing regularly in America before she made the move to England, where she worked for Integrale Muzique distribution and began to learn about producing her own music.

Skirt has been producing tracks since 2002 (some techno, as well as electronic based experiments with her own voice), with a recent release on Subsist Records and forthcoming releases on Trust Recordings and Limetree digital label. Her tracks have received support and been played by Surgeon, Inigo Kennedy, Casual Violence, AvD, Black Smith Craft, Systemic, Samuli Kemppi and Horror Brawl to name a few. She holds DJ residencies at The Head Club (Birmingham), Detatched (Leeds) and Hemlock Nights (global), has made two guest DJ appearances at HowDoYouDo techno night in York.

As a child, I’ve been obsessed with the light breaking under half closed eyes. There were these rich, fickle spots just below your sight, and I spent hours trying to focus and come by.  Once we got a television set, this afternoon amusement stopped for the sake of colourful images that were no longer my own. Time flies.

With these 40 minutes of beats and textures, I tried to re-create the atmosphere of sitting on the couch blinking into the light of the afternoon sun and doing nothing else besides. This is not a collection of ambient tunes, sure. But the genre borders are blurred in the most adventurous Rap and Garage productions nowadays, and it is easy to get lost with an Abby Lee Tee, fuer.steps or Constrobuz track. Loads of exclusive material here. Please enjoy!

Raised on a diet of pure filth, Broken Note have dragged their own unique sound kicking and screaming into the electronic music scene. Combining lean, considered production skills with an appreciation of diverse rough beats, Broken Note have quickly established themselves as a sonic force to be reckoned with.

Broken Note have quickly racked up several critically-acclaimed releases over the past two years on such established and well-praised labels as Ad Noiseam, Ruff (Peace Off’s slow and nasty sister), Damage, Prspct & Sustained.  Fall 2009 saw the release the retrospective Terminal Static on Ad Noiseam, with remixes by notable producers such as Hecq and I Am The Sun (Enduser and Casey Beagle). They are regularly featured in DJ sets and radio shows worldwide, counting tastemakers like Mary-Anne Hobbs and Rob Booth as supporters and fans. Along with a busy production schedule, Broken Note were featured prominently at festival gigs throughout 2009, with a headline sets on the Overkill stage at world-leading Glade Electronic Music Festival,  Maschinenfest Industrial Festival, and various tours throughout Europe, North America, Scandinavia & Japan.

Their slower-tempo sound can loosely be described as Dubstep, but has little in common with much of the scene’s output. Instead they draw from the Sino-Rastafarian sound and heavy bass, combined with more of the kind of dark and aggressive beats that can be found in Breakcore and Jungle. Their Drum’n'Bass output is similarly disturbingly brutal, with undulating beats and bass that are unashamed to draw from the darker, edgier fringes of Gabber and Techno. Dancefloors worldwide have been set alight by the astonishing heaviness, inducing hallucinations of a dark and tech-saturated future.

Broken Note’s live sets use Ableton Live at the core alongside various midi controllers and FX sculpted by on-the-fly warping, cueing and live key work,  intermingling many of their own tunes with edits of music created by the artists they draw inspiration from. Expect a mash-up of everything from dark Dubstep and Hardtekno, to the most evil D’n'B and Hardcore for a sonic experience that’s diverse and engaging.

You best believe Broken Note is that dark spreading tide set to further corrupt ears around the world. Get ready for it.

As already mentioned, the selection on this tracklist is pretty heavy hitting, with some classic tracks from the likes of Warp, Axis, R&S, Basic Channel, and Djax-Up-Beats.

Edinburgh’s a town of transients and tourists. No one actually lives in Edinburgh. They’re just passing through. It doesn’t make for much of a music scene, to be honest. In the mid-’90s, though, something clicked. The city was vibrant: Techno, house, Trainspotting. The latter is what everyone remembers. The middle one is something that’s finally hitting more than a decade later, courtesy of Fudge Fingas, Linkwood and the Firecracker label.

The first one, however, is largely forgotten. Nonetheless, two clubs hosted some of the world’s most famous techno DJs to packed crowds, ravers that pushed for harder, more abrasive sounds. Sativa and Pure. Pure and Sativa. Clubs that many felt stood in opposition to one another, and yet probably had more in common than either would care to admit.

Pure was the cultured club. The place where the international DJs made their Edinburgh debut. Hawtin, May, Mills. It was hard. But soft. Especially compared to Sativa, the bare-knuckle brawler. Sativa was the home to the crusties. The place where you might hear some gabber if you weren’t careful. Cristian Vogel, Neil Landstrumm and Dave Tarrida found their way here.

This mix pretty much sums up what I have been listening to in the electronic music world featuring some incredibly talented producers. Its deep, thought provoking, cerebral electronic music that skips from one genre to another. The first few tunes are dubby and bass driven which will work best on the very finest sound system you can play them on. I could have filled out the whole mix with tunes like these such is the continual overwhelming quality of releases that labels such as Hotflush, Hessle Audio, Hyperdub et al are releasing.

It’s definitely an exciting time for fresh, innovative dance music which is replacing the generic run of the mill dance floor fodder. Anyway, I decided to pick things up with the middle section of the mix which features some half time D&B which is a sound that I am definitely feeling right now. Dancefloor D&B this is definitely not. It’s, superbly produced, intelligent and detailed drum & bass that hooks you into a groove. The drum programming on the Rockwell tune is just insanely good. Definitely a producer to watch out for. The mix moves back into dubby stuff and an ambient tune from Shed which basically sounds like an old Aphex tune. The mix finishes on some lovely dub techno and a proper old classic rmx of Model 500 by Dave Angel which is ageing like a fine wine. It sounds dated, but still fits into most mixes nicely. The last tune is a from a young Scottish producer called Wireman. On first listen it will probably scare the pants off of you as it is incredibly dark, eerie and industrial. However, stick with it and wait for the chords to drop. It then all makes sense. As does the rest of the mix I hope. Enjoy!

The Dead Baby In A Plastic Bag project is a live edit collaboration between the Krauts: Unclean and Pripad. Merging traditional analogue with modern digital DJ techniques, in an attempt to break down those outdated musical boundaries. DBIAPB is rather an unhealthy mixture of industrial breaks, power electronics and rhythmic noise techno, not as they put it, the typical 4/4 techno manner. Indeed they go to say, their sound focuses on political situations, acoustic confrontation, manipulation and sonic challenges embedded in total darkness. In other words, win.

Dead Baby In A Plastic Bag thought it’s about time for a new set. It honestly took us a while but after 4 or 5 pre-lists we finally found what we were looking for. The construction is a bit different, we made two parts. At the beginning one total part was on the card but we were never really satisfied with what came out. The tracks didn’t harmonize as we wanted so we decided to split and tell you the story in 2 different parts. But enough blabla..

Found this set on an old disk, didn’t realise i had it. I remember the gig itself went pretty bad, it was the second CC and the first one had apparently been really busy and went off great. Fair play to the CC guys, they had plastered big posters all over town with my name on them all big n stuff. Unfortunately it would appear noone had heard of me.

When i played it was pretty quiet and i had to endure one guy constantly asking me to play autechre or radioactive man with me replying, ‘do you see any fucking decks here mate?’

Horror Brawl (aka Bushby and Neil M) are based in Leeds and have been DJing together for many years. Hard to pigeon hole they are known for their diverse sound incorporating techno, house, dubstep, machine funk and any other genre they like. This love and knowledge of many genres means they have had a few residencies in Leeds throughout their career but have also played gigs in London and Bristol. Now they can be found regularly rocking the various rooms at Detatched; whether it be banging it out in the warehouse or playing more subdued vibes in the backroom. When not playng at Detatched they run two respected digital labels: Digital Distortions and Limetree Projects which specialise in releasing quality futuristic dancefloor electronics and techno from new and little known producers.
