Late last year I was invited to produce a guest mix for Mad EP‘s monthly show on Sub FM: Tasty Cyanide.

Earlier today Mad EP finally sorted out the archive recording of the show. It’s a pretty wide selection of sound, even for me, but I hope you enjoy it.

I missed the live broadcast myself so I’ve been waiting to see just what Mad EP dropped either side of my mix. Looking at it, it’s one hell of a selection from the beatsmith.

Mad EP has a new 12″ Beat Downs & Down Beats on the horizon featuring vocals by Nongenetic (ShadowHuntaz) and Vandell Harris (Mad/EQ) as well as cello by the man himself.

What with the radio show and the Darkfloor in Session mixes, I’ve sort of neglected getting together a demo tape, so here is one I recorded recently comprising of some the tracks I’m really feeling at the moment.

Starting with a track from the seminal Chill Out LP from The KLF, into broken techno, through very early Drumcode and brand new Perc Trax into acid breakbeat, mutant electrostep, sound designed breakstep, glitch IDM hardcore to finishing on a cheeky little edit of my own devising.

Two weeks ago the set I made for Alavux’s Emiter show on Serbian based station Elektrana was broadcast. I’ve been meaning to post the set for a few days now, but as is often the case these days, things didn’t quite work out as planned.

Sixty Zero for Serbia is comprised of some absolutely killer electro and breakbeat, if I do say so myself, that has kept my ears busy over the past year and beyond.

Interview: Q&A with DVNT for City of Bass

Top of the pile is the new release from the awesome Senking aka Jens Massel. I’ve been raving about his latest release Pong since getting it to all and sundry. It’s just fantastic from start to finish. It’s one of the most accessible of releases so far on the experimental sound label Raster-Noton. I can’t recommend it enough (you can stream it on Spotify). Actually, looking at this list, I’ve been on a bit of a Raster-Noton thing this week it seems. With releases from Blir, Alva Noto, Atom, and Signal all getting into my most listened list.

The new netaudio release from Swaying Smoke; From Ruin to Bliss has also been a very enjoyable listen. Memoryhouse continues to make me feel warm and fuzzy as does the self titled LP from Australian band kyu.

The new one from Minus and Marc Houle is pretty sweet, with title track Drift, easily the best on the album. Defo worth a listen if you ask me. Oh, and finally, check out the group Japanese Gum with their release Lost in Weirdness, out now on netlabel Chewz.

Japanese Gum is characterized by wall of delayed guitars, soft vocals, electronic glitch beats and synth pads… melted with psychedelic obsessive loops…

I’m somewhat embarrassed to say it’s taken so many years to finally properly listen to some early Speedy J, but by the wonders of Spotify I’ve been able to fill my need. Specifically I’m referring to Public Energy No. 1 and A Shocking Hobby releases, which should be winging themselves to me via the postal service. Well I hope they are, but the track record most of us have with the British postal service is somewhat tarnished.

Mix wise, I’ve been really enjoying the new Fabric CD mixed by Surgeon, which finally arrived. Also of note is DJ Food’s 2002 Boards of Canada mix. But you already know all about the recent darkfloor posts, don’t ya.

Fresh Static takes its name from a line of poetry: “My body tingling with fresh static all my own” .. Okay so the poem has more to do with someone turning into an android to be with a cybernetic lover, but tingling with fresh static is exactly how great electronic music should make you feel! So this is what we are trying to get out there .. Great electronic music - Fresh static for you!

Most of Fresh Static’s social activity happens in Second Life. The idea is to promote underground techno and electro, with parties featuring DJs from real-life alongside DJs based in the virtual scene. Currently we’re organising regular parties at The Drome. Come along and you’ll hear DJs and live electronics across a range of styles - all aimed squarely at tickling your brain cells and making your virtual feet shuffle :)

Second Life opens up fresh opportunities for electronic music to spread and grow, so we’re also publishing features on this website about the scene in Second Life – The DJs and producers, the clubs, new builds, parties. We want a crossover, so we have the parties where real world DJs play in Second Life alongside DJs from the virtual scene, while also writing about the electronic music scene in Second Life for the real world to read about.

I was asked a few months back to provide a mix for the great Resonance FM show, Marvin Suicide. The show has been running for 181 episodes (and counting) and features only netaudio music. That is music that is freely and legally available from the internet.

So I put together a half hour kinda mix/compilation entitled Nil Difficile Volenti (Nothing (is) impossible to the one who wants it) for the show which was aired on Resonance FM (104.4 FM in London) on January 27th at 13:30GMT.

the showcase

Coming up this week we have a bit of ‘techno takeover‘ courtesy of CONFOUNDED. CONFOUNDED are DVNT and Mr Seavers.

You should know all about me, DVNT, already. Mr Seavers was one of our first showcased artists back in 2007 on the 3rd show. He also came back and helped host the 4th show (with EVAC)

Mr Seavers cut his DJing teeth playing for Flatline at The Bomb in Nottingham. Slots at a variety of small clubs and bars in the area followed, both solo and as part of Breaks duo Max Hedroom, graduating to sets at seminal breaks night Spectrum, London-based Ffaction, and the near-legendary “Max Hedroom presents” nights in the last few days of The Bomb’s existence – mixing up Dubstep, Tough Electro and bowel-loosening Hard Techno to devastating effect with fellow cohorts Gareth Williams and Max Cooper.

Currently still enjoying a residency at Nottingham’s infamous long-standing Hard Techno night Pure Filth, playing alongside such names as DAVE the Drummer, Rowland the Bastard, Chris Liberator, Lief Ryan, Esther Ofei, Darc Marc, James Ruskin, Michael Forshaw, Julian Liberator and Mark Hawkins.

We first performed together as CONFOUNDED back in May in London and shall be a multi deck Techno Takeover, whilst dipping our fingers into the Mantis spec, darkfloor electronica range.

An apology for the sound quality of some of the tunes. The setup we did for this show was using Traktor Scratch (as well as traditional vinyl), but it seemed not to respond very well to our CD deck.
