Yea, the past few shows have been slightly on the sporadic, in so much as it’s been 4 weeks since the last show. I can only apologise for that. July has been a very busy month for me and family functions (including the christening of my spiffingly awesome niece) do have to take priority to me pushing some noisy bollocks through the internets. Mind you, quite a few quality mixes have been going up on darkfloor.co.uk. With that said, this week, we’re back with one hell of a showcase, from producer: Mazzula.

the SHOWCASE

“There isn’t a scene for my music in Stoke”

Living in what might be called a ‘cultural void’ as far as dance music is concerned, has only further inspired Paul ‘Mazzula’. Treading the line between electro breaks and techno, recognition has been growing steadily with artists such as Radioactive Man and Dave Clarke supporting.

The current Alive EP is winning Mazzula many plaudits, and is a fitting follow up to earlier, well-received releases on Data-Trace and Bassgun. 2010 is shaping up to be busy, with him working with i-o inc, and Digital Distortions, along with another EP on Data-Trace later in the year.

Known for his livesets, this showcase is a good example of what to expect. Never doing things the easy way, Mazzula’s ethic means his tracks are blown open when played live, and all are different interpretations of the full released tracks, broken down into component parts and re-stitched for full impact.

“I enjoy playing out, and can’t see the point of djing my own tracks. I want as much out of it as the audience.”

OK, first off. Big apologies for the lame and low microphone levels during the first half hour of the broadcast. Secondly, how good was Ed’s set?!

Not sure… download it now then and confirm it for yourself. Oh yea, and thirdly the delay in this archive hitting the internet tubes… usual story, work has got on top of me a bit. Also this week: bit of a minimix from Dessben’s latest release, which it has to be said, it is just stunning. Broken techno and then some. He’s been experimenting with broken rhythms in his productions since he started hearing dubstep on this very show. Awesome stuff indeed. Anyways, without further babbering…

Ed Devane is a Dublin-based artist primarily working with sound. As a producer he is known for releases on a variety of electronic labels, while most recently he released his debut album Molten Membrane (on Mantrap Recordings) – a daring trip through ambient, hip hop tempo melancholy, dub, industrial and into the fiercer chest-shaking attacks that have become his trademark. His interest in sound design has in recent years led him to build his own instruments, including a homemade zither, which was used throughout the recording of Molten Membrane. When not making music Ed also helps in the running of Second Square to None (events, label, blog, audiovisuals)

Coming up this week I’m very happy to present Ventolyn & Becotyde.

the SHOWCASE

Ventolyn & Becotyde aka Rubble Digits is a young man from the rainy city of Galway Ireland. Originally a drummer, he started creating tracks in early 2008, highly influenced by the music he was surrounded by growing up. To date, he has made all his productions available for free, 2 albums and an EP, which have been released on netlabels: Section 27, Pavillion 36, Stasis Records, Engine Of Saturation, Bumpfoot, Ideation and the label he founded, Alkalinear.

His music is meticulously constructed detailed sound. Part sound design, part dancefloor, all good. The music is both abstract and challenging and yet accessible and beautiful at the same time. Generally speaking his sound could be classed as IDM, but that is doing V&B a disservice, as his music encompasses a range of styles and disciplines.

Making music is the only way I can happily and accurately express myself.

Rather than a quest for originality, my interest lies in creating music that means something to me personally, which is very much down to the sounds I have been submersed in since I was young…. I’m all about the nostalgia.’

We’re back and this time we mean business. Coming up this week, Posthuman, live from the studio.

the SHOWCASE

Ahead of the new album, Syn Emergence (coming this summer on Balkan Vinyl) Posthuman headed down to the MANTIS/darkfloor studios to give up a unique and exclusive live performance.

Posthuman is cousins Richard Bevan and Joshu Doherty. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland and London, England.

Their style is unrestricted by genre moving from techno, electro, and breaks, to post-rock, IDM, and ambient. However, their overall signature sound is often dark, brooding and melancholic.

Their debut release in 2000 was a series of hand made CDs simply called “Posthuman” (though better known by the colour of the card inserts – grey, black, blue and brown) which were sold at live shows and via Rough Trade and Smallfish Records in London. The duo then went on to host a number of parties in an abandoned underground train station in London between 2001 and 2004, and founded their own label Seed Records with which they released 3 albums and several other releases of their own and other artists material. They also were the first act on Manchester based electronica label Skam on their SMAK series.

Doherty left Seed Records to help relaunch UK techno imprint B12 Records in 2006, and now runs London clubnight “I Love Acid”. He also is a member of modern classical / electronica crossover outfit Digitonal, and rave / hardcore breaks duo AGT Rave Cru.

Seed Records continues under the stewardship of Bevan and long time collaborator Bruce McClure, whose spoken word pieces feature extensively throughout Posthuman’s output.

Paul Carroll is the man behind the Dead Sound project, a project involving underground techno/electro/dubstep and broken beat techno which he has been working on for the past year after putting his earlier alias ‘Digital Filth’ to rest and has quickly gained him support from top and varied artists including Dave Clarke, Surgeon, James Ruskin, Stormfield and Warlock.

Paul has been playing out live with his own material at underground club nights around the UK most notably Atomic Jam at The Q Club (Nov 09). Paul has also played in top underground techno clubs in Germany that only the locals and people ‘in the know’ knew about including ‘The Villa’ in Berlin and ‘Tranz Hause’ in Hamburg where his hybrid of techno/electro beat went down a storm.

Now concentrating on a new way of playing live using segments of loops from the mass of work produced, usually around 4 loops at a time, in the same vein as Richie Hawtin’s DE9, but all original material. His live sets that are always different, crammed with diverse underground music. Paul’s DJ sets include fast mixing, turntablism. and variety and now using Serato Scratch he’s able to mix his down material in the same vein as DJing, but with the originality of a live set.

SmashBack spent his teenage years in North London training his ears to the evolving sounds of Jungle and House.

His love for underground music led to further training in the art of music production, working various jobs to buy music equipment for his bedroom studio. It wasn’t until he left school when he got into DJing, starting a weekly residency at The Green Man pub in London’s West End. From there, he studied Music Technology at Uni & spent one of his summer breaks working at the now defunct techno institute Prime Distribution in West London. Whilst at Uni, he co-ran the legendary Bulldozer night in the seaside town of Scarborough. It was at least nights that SmashBack introduced the North East coast to Grime, Electro & Booty Bass.

After moving to Manchester, SmashBack got involved with the early stages of the Electrode night, which was to introduce him to the residents of Alien Radio, who asked him to hop aboard and help co-run their night. Electrode now fills the monthly slot that Alien Radio use to grace.

Alongside Paul Blackford, SmashBack co-runs the Bass Gun record label, releasing quality bass-heavy electro. Last year he released the album City Parks, which allowed him to move away from pure dancefloor bombs and develop and experiment with sound. A few weeks ago he released a joint EP with fellow Electrode member Teutonic Kaboom on the Bassgun imprint with some impressive remixes.

Subeena is 24 years old producer Sabina Plamenova, originally from Italy via Germany with Bulgarian roots, now based in London where she studies a Music and Media degree.

Subeena was included in a special feature dedicated to women in electronic music called “X chromosome” by Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1, where she showcased her own special sound on the airwaves amongst other producers such as Ahu, Vaccine, Cooly G, Ikonika and more.

Her productions have also had wide support amongst internationally renowned producers such as Skream, Boxcutter, Vaccine, Mrs Jynx, Jay Scarlett, Mike Slott, Tes La Rok, Dave Q from Dub War and many more.

Her work was initially mainly included in the “dubstep” niche, however it has quickly evolved and has become more diverse, crossing over various “electronic music” genres but at the same time not losing that distinct sound in which Subeena began experimenting with.

She runs a monthly 2 hour radio show on Sub.Fm called ‘Outland’ which includes guest mixes from producers from across the globe.

Sabina took part at the latest Red Bull Music Academy held in Barcelona in autumn 2008, where she collaborated with artists such as UK singer-songwriter Jamie Woon, Mexican producer Pepepe and MC and producer Violet who she also included in her new EP, and with studio team Osborne and Om Mas Keith (Sa-Ra).

The collaboration with Jamie Woon and Om ‘Mas Keith– “Solidify” is included in the Various Assets CD that the Academy releases every year and that features the productions made during the two Terms; it was also released on Planet Mu Records in October ’09.

She has been featured on one of the past editions of the free DVD “Slices” together with producer Dot, who she has been co-running her own record label ‘Imminent Recordings’ (formerly known as ‘Immigrant Recordings’) for a year and a half.

Following on from the serious sound workout of Coefficient’s techno and electro showcase we continue with the techno, taking it a touch deeper for the Drugstore boys.

Drugstore began at the beginning of 2009 as a union of the Bayona Music Collective. One name, six people, one target, six visions of techno music. This is what Drugstore are, one group, able to release a range of styles from tech-house to schranz music.

Always in the same line, our line. Our music always get in touch with techno lovers, always groove, some dark and some industrial sounds, very mental.

In their first year of working collectively together as Drugstore they’ve released tracks and mixes for several net labels around Europe: Offaudio (SPA), Antiritmo (SPA), Ignored Records (SPA), Zimmer (GER), Subversive Media (SPA), Loopzilla (GER) Mixotic (GER). They been supported , reviewed and played by DJs and producers of the electronic music scene from all over the world. Including Dosem [Sino!] (SPA), Nuke [Code Records] (SPA), Exium [Nheoma] (SPA), Bas Mooy [Audio Assault] (NED), A.Paul [Naked Lunch] (POR), DVNT [MANTIS] (UK).

Their tracks and sets have been played in radio shows and stations from Spain to United Kingdom, at Sonidos Distintos (SPA), MANTIS Radio (UK), Dirty Radio (UK) and Wavesound FM (CZ). Over the course of the past year they’ve shared the stage with Mark Broom, James Ruskin, Adam Beyer, Octave One, Ben Sims, Cristian Varela, Exium, Mark Williams, Reeko, Nuke and Cesar Almena as well as regular slots at CODE @ Fabrik, TABOO, MAMBO House Club and PASARELLA.

What little details there are surrounding Coefficient amount to: that he began the project in 2006 and with michaelangelo of Labrynth produces as Telesthesia (exclusively vinyl only released offbeat techno); and that he describes his music as being dark, hypnotic, industrial and experimental techno.

Datacrashrobot is the electro/experimental project of one Sorin Paun. In early 2008, influenced by the classic electro sound, he started producing tracks which he describes as

following a journey into the cold, mechanical, information overloaded mind of robots. The beat is drowned in dark ambiance or broken and twisted, overloaded with effects and glitches creating a state of malfunction and collapse.

Logical Disorder is the name of the therapy that Javier Barrero use to balance his sinusoidal sense of duty. He develops his sounds focusing on ambient and post industrialism, remembering as he puts it

pop phrases and sometimes epic funeral melodies.

Mad EP is Matthew Peters, Iowa native (formerly based in New York, Chicago & Montreal) and recent UK transplant, with a vast and impressive background in electronic and classical music. Peters brings his talents to bear on Mad EP productions in such a way that the end results are diverse and unclassifiable, calmly defying expectations as he skims through every imaginable genre to reach the outer limits of a territory that is indisputably his own.

Peters has been making his own music, variously described as electronic, alternative hip-hop, breakbeat, avant jazz, classical, sample-mania, and consistently unpredictable, for the past ten years in various contexts. His performances have been experienced in clubs, squats, restaurants, art galleries, concert halls, roof tops, radio studios, theatres, and festivals all over North America and Europe. He has also joined the Sub.FM ranks, and has a monthly show called “Tasty Cyanide Radio” – which goes beyond dubstep & garage and features all bass-centric music. In under a year, his playlists have been hailed as uniquely creative and innovative, and have a cult following to match.

Peters is also the consummate collaborative musician. His releases are full of guest appearances by artists with a deep respect his unparalleled musicality: Shadow Huntaz, Puppetmastaz, Jason Forrest (aka Donna Summer), Math Head, Si Begg, Aaron Spectre, Mochipet, End, DJ Grandtheft, jazz trumpeter David Young, percussionist Bryce Beverlin II, and more. Venetian Snares & Leafcutter John both requested him to appear as a cellist on their albums and Peters is often in demand as a remixer, delivering unexpected, yet mind-blowing results.

Kicking of the new year and new decade 2 weeks later than originally planned, I’ll be sure to make up for it. For our 53rd and the 1st showcase of the new decade I’m very happy to present Full Spektrum.

South London based producer Full Spektrum has been making music since around 2003. A bit of an old skool raver, he got into Hardcore and Jungle around ’92-‘93. Later producing his own music, a progression through D&B and garage eventually led to Full Spektrum being introduced to the ever varying sounds of Dubstep.

The deep and versatile nature of the music suited his own productions, and it wasn’t long before he was fusing the sounds of Dubstep and Old Skool with his own trademark rolling breaks. He has received a lot of support from other producers and DJ’s in the scene including Elemental, Warlock, Blackmass Plastics, Noiz, ID, Threnody, Rob Booth and the Urban Graffiti crew. With releases currently out on labels Bankai, UK Trends, Militant Science and Urban Scrumping and forthcoming tracks on Furioso and Mata-Syn, Full Spektrum is a producer with a big sound.

The final broadcast of 2009. It’s been a great year for electronic music, particularly the stuff of a “darkfloor” nature. To see off the year in style, for our 52nd showcase, direct from the Russian Federation: Vadz.

the SHOWCASE

Vadz born Vadim Savchenko in Taganrog, South of Russia in 1980. Whilst growing up Vadz found he could express himself with painting and photography and by age 15 had realised that in music he’d found his calling. At the very beginning,

there were no parties, records or techno; I was just looking for a way to express my non-ordinaries

It was his non-standard view of simple things that provided his conception of musical originality and independence. That was the beginning. From school discos, to local parties, it led to records, synthesizers and sending hordes of demos, to releases, and gigs all over Russian and beyond.

Currently Vadz has 4 physical releases (Television Records and LaBrat Audiochemicals) and an ever growing amount of digital releases (WIDE, Digital Distortions, Militant Science etc…, check his Discography). His releases are supported by loads of Russian techno DJs, as well as international names like Dave Clarke, Radioactive Man, Mark Hawkins, Shelley Parker.

Vadz is devoted to (as he describes it) fat ‘proper’ techno and electro styles that use to rock the dancefloors in late 90s and early zeros. No shuffle-trank minimal, no youngsters-on-speed schranz.

In late 2007 Vadz set up the Russian-Techno.com netlabel to show the world the power and quality of his native producers’ output with good, original and interesting music.

Hot on the heels of the 50th show (with Wu-Tang – Enter the Dubstep), this week we have the Berlin based producer T.R.O.

the SHOWCASE

After growing up in Bayreuth (the Richard Wagner town) T.R.O. moved to Berlin, diving head first into it’s techno scene. Soon after, he became interested in the much smaller but very friendly local breaks scene, especially the legendary Dangerous Drums nights. Now addicted to this sound, his own productions changed from techno to breakbeat, too. In 2004 his début release “Rec” appeared on the Dangerous Drums compilation “It’s a Berlin thing 3” and in 2005 he got the first of several tracks signed on Dr. Schmidt’s label Maschinen Musik (Dr. Schmidt and his label were featured on MANTIS 008). While he still enjoys the full range of breakbeat music, increasingly he’s become interested in other broken beat styles, primarily dubstep and garage and their influence is being absolved into his productions.

T.R.O.’s own label Furioso is dedicated to the idea of merging breaks, dubstep, 2step, and bassline house. With artists like Sharps, Blackmass Plastics, KingThing, and Nicolas Bourbaki it has quickly become a melting pot for future bass music.

To celebrate the milestone of having broadcast 50 shows, this week we have a very special broadcast.

the SHOWCASE

In 2005, the Wu-Tang released Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 1, and MANTIS are ecstatic to have an exclusive mix of the follow up Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 2: Enter The Dubstep. Headed up by previous MANTIS guests, Hellfire Machina, this release is huge.

As Vol. 1 sought to introduce hip-hop fans in general, and specifically, the famously large, loyal and diverse fan-base of the Wu-Tang to the burgeoning world of underground hip-hop, so Vol. 2 seeks to expose another untapped resource of underground talent, skill and artistry to this very same avid and intrepid fan-base.

The project serves a double purpose as well: many of the pioneers and practitioners (DJ’s and producers) in the Dubstep world came up in a time when Wu-Tang ruled the international airwaves. Unlike much commercial hip-hop, the immediacy of Wu-Tang’s sound spoke to many outside of the scope of the typical hip-hop fan, across oceans and at home. Their music and style helped to shape an emerging artform that hadn’t yet defined itself. Now, in 2009, as dubstep continues to grow, expand and encompass more styles and subgenres, the Wu-Tang sound is reintroduced into the mix, to spawn a new and unique musical crossbreeding, that is greater than the sum of its constituent parts.

This groundbreaking album is trail-blazing the collaboration between Dubstep and Hip-Hop, with stomach-pounding, bass-thumping guttural beats, and gully, gritty and grimy lyrics that break into the next decade in the chapters of each respective genre’s history. With Scuba, Parson, Trillbass, Dakimh, DZ, Rogue Star, Stenchman, Datsik & many more producing not remixes, but complex re-interpollations that include a veritable goldmine of Wu-Tang verses from the vaults that feature Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, RZA, GZA, Method Man, U-God & Masta Killa, Wu affiliates Killah Priest, Bronze Nazareth, Prodigal Sunn, Solomon Childs, Son One & more, and guest spots from Busta Rhymes, MF Doom, Pimp C, Three 6 Mafia, Ras Kass, Vast Aire, Canibus, Lord Jamar & many more, this one of a kind compilation is at the forefront of an emerging cultural and musical blend that is taking place on the margins of the mainstream.

OG first picked up on production when he was 16, within a year of buying his first set of turntables. Staying up until stupid o’clock on schoolnights listening to loops and beats for hours on end honed his production style. Inspired primarily by the works of Hybrid, BT and Way Out West, it was the discovery of breakbeat that really fuelled him to find his way in music.

Picking up influences from dubstep, breaks and drum & bass whilst never losing that trancey edge, OG’s first EP is out on midnightminustwo recordings on October 16th and the follow-up is in the works.

OG also co-hosts the bi-weekly No Skool Breaks show with Harka on NSB Radio – playing a variety of breaks, dubstep, drum & bass and techno.

Molez is based out in Subotica, Serbia. His serious interest music began in 2005 when he began collecting vinyl, consisting of the old skool techstep and hardstep sounds from the likes of Ed Rush & Optical, Konflict, Fission, Calyx, Dom & Roland, Technical Itch, Usual Suspects and so on.

Molez was captivated by the dark atmospherics and futuristic sounds and in 2006 met up with one of the members of the Sympton Crew (an organisation responsible for pushing diverse electronic music in Subotica). That member was Noiz, who noticed that they both shared a similar musical taste. From that meeting, Molez joined members Dekode, Drum:R and Noiz to spread the Sympton sound through Serbia. Thanks to Dekode’s electro, IDM and dubstep records Molez grew interested in producing 140bpm paced music rather than producing drum & bass tracks. His productions are characterized by deep and sci-fi soundscapes.

In early 2008 he met up with Alien Pimp (owner of DubKraft Records) who gave Molez his first track; Sabotage on the Cinematic Dubstep Vol 01 release. With this digital release, Molez became one of the first Serbian dubstep producers. He went on to release his fierce, technoid influenced track Scythe on Rottun Recordings Pressure Chamber EP. That same year he was signed to John Bushby’s excellent Digital Distortions label where he released his first EP: Letdown. It was this EP that got me interested in him and I wrote at the time:

“Woah. Serious sound sculpture coming out of this hybrid electro, glitch, dubstep, bass rich behemoth of a track. Molez is a new name to ]dD[ but after this, I can see a very bright future ahead. This is a producer in full control of their sound.”

This Summer he followed up that EP with his next, Last Ditch, also on Digital Distortions. He has an upcoming release, Fields, on Bankai Audio (the Stormfield and Thorn Industries aka Blackmass Plastics joint project label) later this year. His musical dream hasn’t quite come completely true yet as he aims to have a vinyl release some day soon.

Jerome Hill started DJing in 1990 and since his first residency on the infamous 90’s soundsystem ‘JIBA‘, playing illegal warehouse parties across London and the UK he has bought his own unique take on electronic dance music to world renown hotspots including Tresor (Berlin), House of God (Birmingham), Eurobeat 2000 (London), Circuito (Sao Paulo) and Glade Festival (UK); is resident at UglyFunk and BLOC Weekend and co runs ‘Swerved‘ in London.

Jerome has played tiny sweatboxes and massive clubs and festivals all around the world from Japan to Venezuala, Poland to Malta with a special love for Brasil where he played in over 40 towns and cities including to 20,000 people at the 2004 A.M.E. parade in Sao Paulo.

For seven years ending in 2004 he managed Camden Town’s ‘Dragon Disks‘ and ‘Trackheads‘ record shops, punting out all manor of weird and wonderful music to London and it’s visitors.

His label ” Don’t ” has been releasing maverick technoid music since 2000 and shows no sign of slowing down. His productions can be found on many other labels.

His eclecticity and genuine love of music enables him to spin virtually any style with integrity .. from thundering techno and old skool, right through to low slung funk, dancehall and party hiphop…

Although his favourite sets are the long ones where he incorporates all of the above and more. A surprise is always just around the corner!

Metroboy aka Ben Ervine is a producer/DJ from the southwest of England, and forms one half of award-winning breakbeat duo Ben and Lex. Metroboy’s music is a crunchy, hard-bleep style of minimal and tech house, with unflinching grooves and uplifting tones sure to lock in any dancefloor. His remix of Benjamin Vial’s “The Bass and the Monkey” was released on Plasma.Digital in Feb 2009. Further remixes for Ape and VIM records are in the pipeline.

Since Sept 2007 MetroBoy has hosted a bi-monthly tech house, minimal and techno show on Brap.FM featuring the latest sounds from Minus, Get Physical and Berlin as well as many other quality modern tech producers. A full archive of the show in podcast format is available on the MetroBoy blog – Well worth exploring for some awesome mixage from tech jazz and deep house to crunchy techno.

the SHOWCASE

Born in 1976, ZLK’s music education began at home thanks to his father who was a microelectronics engineer and a pirate radio fanatic and at the age of eight years old he started sampling on his dad’s multitrack reeltapes and C64 using SID synthesis, making weird noise tracks.

During his teens and working at a local electronics shop he bought his first SL1200’s and began DJing and organising parties together with a group of friends. ZLK kept a very broad and versatile interest in all forms of electronic music and incorporated a computer and music software into his analog setup.

Being part of the collective ‘Noxgenus‘, ZLK and the rest of the crew kept their music freely available for everyone by distributing it on cassettes, minidiscs, CDs and eventually on the internet. Releases on commercial vinyl and CD’s are rare, but some material has been exclusively released on FingersLTD, N.E.W., Kommando 6 and Simulacron.

Following on from our 43rd show and the label showcase of Black Hoe Recordings, we again present a label for the showcase: Phonocake.org, who I’ve been hooked on since we showcased their artist Kern back on MANTIS 025

the SHOWCASE

Phonocake mostly releases introspective relaxing deep music, but the artists have a diverse interest in music. Which Parmon, label owner, hopes you hear in this, his showcase mix.

In 2003, four guys, who had never met before, but emailed just twice, started to brainstorm about bringing out the fantastic music being produced by their friends. They decided that a netlabel was the best way to do it.

because free and easy is unbeatable

The musicians they wanted to sign to the label were giving away CDrs locally in mini pressings of about 40/50. Most of the artists were based in Dresden, East Germany, which back in the 90s was called the Detroit of Germany by Underground Resistance’s Mad Mike Banks. About 2 years ago Phonocake opened up to sign artists from beyond Dresden.

Pushing their artists creatively Parmon says:

Some of the Phonocake artists also have releases on ‘hardmedia’ labels like Drop Bass Networks, Suburban Trash, Goldtears and so on, but of course also on other netlabels, like Kahvi, binkcrsh, Nishi, Elpa, No Response

Phonocake also aimed to combine the virtual world where their music was with the offline-world, and from that they began to provide workshops and music events. Through their activities as a label and collective they’ve motivated others to start their own netlabels, including Jahtari, pumplane and XLR.

Returning to civilization after the rather excellent Glade Festival and we’re straight back to broadcast. This time from the prolific label, Black Hoe Recordings and label owner Migu.

Back in 1996, Migu began to latch onto the musical world as an enthusiastic listener; hardcore techno, German speedcore and the Prodigy. 1999 and he begins to develop a vinyl habit, which takes over by 2001. From there he gets into running his own Lucidum Intervallum parties, pushing the drum’n’bass scene in Budapest.

Two Hungarian DJ friends (Samulkow and Kozy) join him and together they forge the group Black Hoe in September 2004. Performances and radio shows see Migu and his friends perform along the likes of Technical Itch, Dylan, Robyn Chaos, Limewax, The Panacea, Cooh, Dom & Roland, Audio, Spl, The Sect, Evol Intent, B-Key, Current Value, Donny, DJ Hidden, Eye-D, Counterstrike, Kryptic Minds, Sunchase, Black Sun Empire, Bad Company, Twisted Individual, Lee, Lenny D, Ophidian, The Rapist, Jason Forrest aka Donna Summer, Drumcorps, Judg’Ann and Pedro Zazn.

By 2005, Black Hoe is more than just a DJ collective, it’s now a net label with the aim to present less know, but talented and skilled producers to the world. Bringing the work of producers like Mystification, Unabomber, Numek and Dashcraft from Hungary, the Romanian Core Corp, Hemoglobin, Gasmask 71, Reemo, Eye and Noize Punishment from Czech Republic, the Belgian Antichristus, Lorcscyric and Cytech from Germany and the American Company Truck up to the plate.

Black Hoe Alimony came along in early 2008, being the paid-for digital imprint. Endeavoring to collect tunes

which are not acceptable only for those who live in the dark but others who are walking on the bright side. Besides this, the label aims at presenting something new and different, some hybrid sound. With her first release line of bearing was determined: the epic piano melody, the amen madness and hardcore techno beats of Show Me How To Cry touch the future.

2008 is also the year that Migu awakened to the idea of producing music, and with Volko he formed V8, bringing heavy, but completely different industrial drum n bass music to the foreground.

And we continue. For our 42nd show we welcome up to the showcase selection, Deadman DJ.

the SHOWCASE

Starting out making parody rave tracks and sparse 8bit industrial loops on an Amiga 500 back in the mid 90s, Deadman DJ soon constructed a home-made recording setup using a customised HH amplifier, two tape recorders, an FX unit, mic, guitar and the trusty Amiga with which to record lo-fi oddball songs about computer systems.

Soon, playing in bands took precedence and a number of years were spent gigging as the bass player for Godcone and Koresh. After a brief stint with Honey Ride Me A Goat, Deadman returned to electronic music production and DJing around 2002/3.

Soon afterwards Deadman set up the Virus B-23 netlabel with long-time friend Henryoid and around the same time became a resident at the Breakism night in Kent playing alongside many great DJs such including Distance, SOTEG & Carbon Community and Stormfield.

After putting the label to bed due to increasing family commitments, Deadman returned to music production and DJing, and now hosts a bi-weekly show on Brap.FM playing a range of styles with the occasional special guest.

We’re back on air. New station and new day. And to kick off MANTIS starting on SWU Radio, we have on the showcase this week the acid techno of Acidizer

the SHOWCASE

Finnish musician Acidizer aka J. Raninen played classical piano as a kid, but was more interested in rhythms like those he heard in the electronic music on the radio or from computer games. He ditched the piano and picked up tracker software and begun to compose. Sometime in the mid 90s, inspired by Hardfloor he bought a 303 and formed a band called Healium, with T. Kesäniemi. Their first record came out in ‘99 on Skeletor Records and they began to tour around Finland. Which they’ve been doing ever since.

Healium is currently releasing material on Communiqué records. Following their signing with Skeletor Records, label manager Kalle Karvanen introduced K. Karm to Healium and they began to do special guest star gigs with him. This later developed into the K.Larm & J.Raninen project also releasing on Communiqué.

Occasionally Acidizer produces solo material and it’s this that got MANTIS interested. His track Stretch on the excellent net label release of Machine Cut Grooves on the Noise Network blew me away. So much so, I had to get him on the showcase.

After 2 years of broadcasting with Brap FM, the time has come to move on. For our 40th and final show with Brap we’ve got Acroplane Recordings stepping up to the showcase.

the SHOWCASE

Paul Acroplane aka DJ Acroplane Recordings has been knocking about Ireland djing at clubs, festivals and free parties for about 10 years, having played alongside artists as diverse as Autechre, Scorn, Si Begg, Clark, Boxcutter, Luke Vibert, DJ/Rupture, Surgeon, King Cannibal, Kevin Saunderson, Ebola, Yee-King, Remarc, Aaron Spectre and Bong-Ra, to name but a few. He was the main man behind Belfast’s now legendary Diston events, and now heads up the city’s Acroplane Movement shows in venues of all shapes and sizes.

Not content with that Paul started up Acroplane Recordings, a free netlabel hosting music from the likes of Boxcutter, Somatic Responses, Chevron, Mothboy, Mad EP, Ebola, Igorrr, Space Dimension Controller, Lackluster, wAgAwAgA, Red Box Recorder and Vertical67, among dozens of others. Acroplane Recordings has a diverse selection of sound on offer on the label, providing consistently high quality releases to rival any of what the big boy electronic labels can offer. For free. You cannot argue with that.

Full of northern promise, this Mancunian is currently on a cultural exchange in London. Previously know as Strategy he’s trod a steady path through years of graft on the DJ circuit that’s led him to a definite personal style. With his first productions released last year on MANTIS fave, Myuzyk, and upcoming output on mmii and Take. Trust me, when I say that this name is one to watch.

To celebrate the launch of his EP on midnightminustwo (released 8th June), MANTIS invited him to provide a showcase. Not one to stick to style, but on the same vibe, he’s selected up a deep dubstep selection to rival any of the scene leaders.

Following our 2nd Anniversary (check it here) for our 38th show MANTIS presents the Midland based label, Wigflex. With their second EP on the horizons (22nd June 2009), their first one impressed me so much I had to get them on the show.

DJ and producer Spam Chop runs Nottingham’s long-established Wigflex night, making clued up ravers jump and twist to some of the weirdest, most fucked up and cutting edge electronic music around. The Wigflex ethos is essentially “keep it unpredictable (and fun)”, with a soundtrack ranging from dubstep, tech haus and techno to bleep hop, wonky bumps and, well, pretty much anything else. That unpredictability carried over brilliantly into their warmly-welcomed first EP a couple of months ago.

The guys, label artists metaphi (1st half) and Taylor (2nd half), have presented an exclusive mix full to bursting of forthcoming gems.

As we approach the anniversary of broadcasing MANTIS for 2 years and reflecting on all the great showcases so far provided we have another sterling selection to add to that ever growing list from the Glasgow based producer Galaxian.

the SHOWCASE

Galaxian has been making music on and off for roughly 12 years. Within the last year and a half he has been producing electro style beats and during that time has knocked up a few releases on a number of different labels.

His influences come more from Techno and IDM styles than your more traditional electro. This results in his electro having a different flavour from what you’ve come to expect in that style. He is constantly striving to being new ideas and sounds to his productions whilst maintaining that strong sense of danceability. It’s also got to always be fresh and funky he says.

His showcase for MANTIS combines some 221 layers/tracks of sound with him estimating 75% of the set being made exclusively for MANTIS. Of which I’m honoured.

With forthcoming releases on Z-Bop and Solar One Music and more, this man’s music is something you need in your life.

After the mammoth showcase from dub_teq provided last time around, this week we’ve got the French producer come bass monster, Ohmwerk.

the SHOWCASE

Ohmwerk started producing music in 1997 alongside his brother Major Klemt.

He favours a varied style of electro, producing mutant dubstep, in addition to making dark DnB, acid rave, and experimental beats. His current sound is best described as camped with the grimey and techy bracket of bass music with hard, angular rhythms, twisted bass mechanics and dark atmospherics grindings.

Supported by DJs from across the board from BBC Radio 1 (Mary Anne Hobbs), Dubstep FM and of course the mighty Brap FM, Ohmwerk runs the Polygohm label with Major Klemt, stamping out one hell of a sonic footprint, very clearly their own.

In the showcase seat this week we present dub_teq. Who provided a full on rowdy assault of the ear lobes, and stormed through some 58 tunes in a little under an hour.

the SHOWCASE

William Culshaw and Jonathan Hall began their career making and trading mixtapes and various other media between them, and gradually were inspired to move on to their own compositions using basic computer programs recording previously under various pseudonyms before finishing on dub-teq. Taking advantage of a wide array of equipment, the duo have slowly sculpted their style into a more organic and industrial one, drawing influences from a diverse source of acts such as Aphex Twin, LFO, Autechre, Surgeon, Radiohead, Big Youth, and Bjork.

Coming fresh off the back of a string of London performances, dub_teq bought their unique blend of styles to our airwaves with an exclusive live/DJ show. Playing unreleased and previously unheard material from albums ‘Take Action‘ and ‘We’re Not Out to Make Friends‘ dub_teq offered an insight into the relentless pace and energy of their shows. Drawing influence from across the globe, their distinctive blend of hard hitting techno and dub breaks is one not to be missed.

Spring’s here, and on the MANTIS this week, we’ve got some Brazilian techno talent from Vector Commander. Bit of a change this week, as due to severe microphone problems there is no spoken word action. Yes yes I know, no DVNT screwing up the English language. A big shout to those who stuck with us during the live broadcast.

Alex Strunz has always liked electronic music, ever since he first heard groups like New Order, Front 242 and Depeche Mode.

The Vector Commander project begun in 2002 and takes influence from Front Line Assembly, A Split Second, Project Pitchfork, Nitzer Ebb, and Front 242 as well as several Techno DJs including: Speedy J, Chris Liebing, Sven Vath, Thomas P. Heckmann, Terence Fixmer, Christian Varella, Dave Clake, Adam Beyer, and Richie Hawtin.

Halfway through 2005 the Vector Commander project was changed to incorporate new fusions and sonorities leaving behind the analogical sound, but keeping always, the dark dancing atmosphere.

Towards the end of 2005, triggered by deep research into experiences, new equipment. New technology appeared in Alex’s LIVE PA with analogical lines but without any boundaries, but always with live intervention as a key factor. Thus was incorporated new effects and vocoders in the live situation creating a real Techno show.

From then to now, his LIVE PA hasn’t stopped and he has been at a fair few parties, clubs and Techno raves having at his sides DJs like: Speedy J, Inigo Kennedy, Vince Watson, Dan Physics, and Ade Fenton. He has also been at Brazilian festivals and European Web radios in different countries.

Right then my pretties. MANTIS is rolling them out steady now and this week in the showcase selection we have System 2.

SHOWCASE
System 2 is the DJ alias of Charlie McConville and a production collaboration project with James Field. Their sound fuses elements of breaks, electro and tech funk. This MANTIS mix showcases the System 2 DJ sound incorporating a range of influences from deeper 4/4 styles to electro influenced house to techy breaks.

The mix includes tracks from the 1st System 2 digital EP which is due for release in March on R3tox Digital Recordings. The System 2 sound can currently be heard at the Quandry nights in Windsor and the Delirious parties at the White House in Clapham as well as various warehouse raves around East London.

Being that we broadcast this show on Valentine’s day, we have a bit of massacre for you. Not one, but 2 showcases on offer, courtesy of Gunjack and Hellfire Machina.

SHOWCASE 1

Heading up our first of this weeks 2 showcases, we present Gunjack.

Native to Los Angeles, California, Gunjack AKA Brian Gibbs started his first label, Deafmosaic while residing in Tokyo, Japan. Gibbs later moved to Spain and released many techno gems through Jaxx Records, Madrid. Currently Gibbs is in South America. His beats are utter filth, and his production showcase is going to be a relentless listen make no mistake.

SHOWCASE 2

Stepping out from the Big Apple, but originating from London, Hellfire Machina have been turning heads since the projects inception last year. Sonic exploration in the realm of 140 bpm, with an ethos of non conformity, heavy bass and fierce attitude, the Hellfire crew are set to explode. Their productions have already been devastating dancefloors around the world which has led to a biweekly DJ residency in New York, numerous releases penned for the first part of 2009 not to mention a host of remixes that are currently being crafted in their studio ‘Planet Twisted‘.

Hellfire consists of Jody Shires aka Mechabot1 (one half of Sunz Of Mecha + Uncouth Youth / label boss of Mechanoise / owner of BreaksFM), Tom Williams aka Chosen Substance (founding member of Junglist Movement and Raw Groove), and Michael Deane aka Mikey FX (one half of Cause n FX / part of the team behind Mechanoise)

Enough Records is a genre-less netlabel from Portugal, funded in 2001 out of a pirate netradio experiment. Enoughradio died out but the netlabel carried on releasing material ranging from the laidback postrock indie pop electronica idm to the harsh electro rock industrial noise with plenty of ambient in between.

The label is curated by the hands of Filipe ‘ps’ Cruz, equally responsible for this showcase of what can be heard within Enough Records.

Dessben began his DJing in Madrid at the end of the 90s and was pretty soon was to be heard in many of the clubs and events of Spain. Clubs like Yasta, Specka, Base, Naru, Zeusas as well as the Electrosonic Festival and Womad. Sharing sessions with artists such as Mark Broom, Cristian Varela, Oscar Mulero, Takaaki Itoh and Sebastian Kramer as well as countless others.

As far as netaudio goes, Dessben and his label are pretty important. In 2004 he founded Offaudio, which is arguably one of the best Techno netlabels on the internet.

His way of understanding Techno music is based on experimentation and the searching of new textures and sound structures. Aiming to be far from the dance music or the classic techno tradition and to be marked in a clear and personal style, full of risky, curious and hypnotic sounds.

With 7 releases on his Offaudio label and 2 on Antiritmo as well as various remixes he’s a name that should be cropping up more and more in people’s playlists. You’ve only got to check previous DVNT charts to see his influence.

His participation in the world netlabel scene is wide and his works can be found in many livesets and mixes of artists all over the world from labels like Zimmer-Records, Loopzilla, SonicWalker and Mixotic.

Kicking open the first show of 2009 we were met with King Cannibal’s remix of The Qemists latest effort, supported by the whob heavy breakstep of Hellfire Machina, the forthcoming Owd Skool classic from Mazzula, Vadz on the remix of Alex W, unreleased deep dubstep from Headhunter and a bit of acid from RL/VL as well as many others.

Heavily inspired by early rave and Detroit Electro, his first release on Breakin’ records in 2003 was described as a pioneering UK take on the Detroit Techno Bass sound. Since then, Blackford has released tracks on labels such as WIDE, Deadlock Records and DJ Godfather’s Twilight 76. In 2007 Blackford set up Bass Gun Records with Smashback as an output for their own material as well as putting out fast bass-driven Electro from other artists. Miss Kosmix is the youngest DJ of the London based Malfaiteurs Soundsystem. At the age of just 23 she has played around London and abroad alongside the likes of the finest harder techno DJs out there. Such as Jeff Amadeus, Aaron Liberator, Chris Liberator, Julian Liberator, The Geezer, Rackitt, D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Gizelle, Pattrix, DJ K.N, DJ Staw, Olivier FX, Jerome Hill, Zebedee, Miss Daisy, Lusinda, Sterling Moss, Product 19, DJ Adrenalin, Syber Symon, Carl Hendricks, and DJ Ogi.

In early 2007 she earned herself a residency with London’s longest running Techno night: Nuclear Free Zone, which has been going for some 16 years at Club 414 in Brixton.

Her motto goes a little something like this: ‘there are no problems only solutions, so keep on avin’ it!’

Based in Dresden, Germany; Kern is a recent discovery of mine and I was really impressed with his liveset release on the Phonocake label. Things being as they are I asked him to provide a mix for the show. He’s a member of the collective Idealfun and alongside the Kern name has 2 other alias: dk69 and One Day in Metropia. SHOWCASE 1st
Coming out of London we have the latest signing to the awesome net label Serein Records roster: The Inventors of Aircraft. Having recently released their first LP; Unknown Language, on Serein they really caught my attention. So much so I invited them to give us a production showcase of their sound. It’s going to be deep, textured and soothingly lush sound. Droney, organic and late at night really quite hypnotic.

SHOWCASE 2nd
In contrast to that we have France’s Tiburce Palmier. I closed a MANTIS a few shows back with one of his tracks and was blown away. So it follows, he’s on the show giving us our second production showcase for MANTIS this week. Citing influences such as SPOR, Godflesh, Front 242, Boards of Canada and Scorn you know we’re in for a real treat.

Coming up this week we have a bit of Techno Takeover courtesy of CONFOUNDED. In a similar style to MANTIS 022 with HENRY (MYUZYK) vs DVNT it’s a joint host kinda feel. CONFOUNDED are DVNT and Mr Seavers.

You should know all about me, DVNT, already. Mr Seavers was one of our first showcased artists back in 2007 on the 3rd show. He also came back and helped host the 4th show (with EVAC)

Mr Seavers cut his DJing teeth playing for Flatline at The Bomb in Nottingham. Slots at a variety of small clubs and bars in the area followed, both solo and as part of Breaks duo Max Hedroom, graduating to sets at seminal breaks night Spectrum, London-based Ffaction, and the near-legendary “Max Hedroom presents” nights in the last few days of The Bomb’s existence – mixing up Dubstep, Tough Electro and bowel-loosening Hard Techno to devastating effect with fellow cohorts Gareth Williams and Max Cooper.

Currently still enjoying a residency at Nottingham’s infamous long-standing Hard Techno night Pure Filth, playing alongside such names as DAVE the Drummer, Rowland the Bastard, Chris Liberator, Lief Ryan, Esther Ofei, Darc Marc, James Ruskin, Michael Forshaw, Julian Liberator and Mark Hawkins.

We first performed together as CONFOUNDED back in May in London and shall be a multi deck Techno Takeover, whilst dipping our fingers into the MANTIS spec, darkfloor electronica range.

An apology for the sound quality of some of the tunes. The setup we did for this show was using Traktor Scratch (as well as traditional vinyl), but it seemed not to respond very well to our CD deck. This is now all sorted for future shows.

Easy now. Hope you’ve recovered from the hard as battering that the Concrete DJz gave us last time on MANTIS 021. Coming up this week we have something a little different. Live from MANTIS HQ, we welcome Henry, good friend, Myuzyk.net label owner and all round musical muse.

the SHOWCASE

Henry became obsessed with music from a young age as a listener and developed a taste for electro and hip hop in the mid 80s and in the early 90s was all about acid, techno and indie. With the mid 90s began his love affair with electronica and what was then described as trip hop.

Around 1998 he met a new group of friends having moved to a different town, they were still throwing not quite legal parties and had been since the CJB days … He got involved gradually and was part of an alliance known as skinchimney which went on to host parties and club nights around North Kent.

Eventually the move from just being a music fan to becoming a DJ happened and the 1210s became the new toy.

Playing a mixture of downtempo and electro tinged breakbeat at a night he hosted with a friend which saw some full tilt partying and guests such as SOTEG, Stormfield, Distance, Steelzawheelz and many more.

Over the years there have been many aliases and projects including cottage industry labels with mates which sowed the seed for Virus B-23 (a sterling label that is sadly missed. Helped launch the career of a certain dubstep heavyweight – Markomen and accolade from fellow bass heavyweight Tayo)

When the time came to move on from this small but much loved label he decided to go it alone and founded an internet based outlet called myuzyk (fast becoming one of THE net labels, every release is frankly, awesome).

Since MANTIS’ inception on Brap FM’s airwaves we’ve been pushing the myuzyk sound and releases and shall continue to do so as long as the excellent music keeps flowing. So I’ve temped Henry out of deepest darkest Kent into South London and get him round the MANTIS HQ.

Rather than the usual showcase, we did a kinda back to back session. Each playing stuff pushing all the right buttons at the moment. As is the norm with MANTIS, the range of sounds is all over shop, but the textures and tastes are of a deep musicalness, a clear sigh of artists and producers who are masters of their craft.

Another week, another MANTIS. Coming up this week we have Serbia’s number 1 Hard Techno export: the Concrete DJz. And boy, did they rinse the hell out of it in their hour.

the SHOWCASE

The Concrete DJz are Filip Xavi, DJ Mita, Matsura and DJ Luka. Since forming in 2003 as residents of Club Akademija, the Concrete DJz have been pushing forward Techno in Serbia and the World.

They’ve been responsible for a lot of the parties in Serbia since then and have played some of the biggest events the country has to offer; including EXIT Festival and Ove je Moj Grad MTV Festival and elsewhere including Dance Industry Studios and Kommunity in London, the Orange Peel in Wales, Nightgrooves in Croatia, and Proactive in Montenegro

Their production style of Techno is free of boundaries, yet defined; ranging from dark beats, to pounding grooves as the strive to combine the most diverse elements of the sound into a new whole with an edge of power and intelligence.

On top of their performing as producing they hold down a successful radio show, Beton, with Aramtura Records.

For the rest of 2008 they have new releases on Submissions and Hardsignal, as well as a debut release for Crowbar Records, Compound and more.

the SHOWCASE

Nymate Association consists of 2 Hungarian gentleman living in the countryside. Nymus (Tamas Jacso) and dr.Telsa (Adam Reiner), classmates who became friends. Nymus’s influences come from early electronica, Trance, Progressive House and Techno until around 98 when he discovered Drum + Bass. dr.Tesla got his fix from abstract Hip-Hop, classic Nu-Skool Breaks and Drum + Bass. The two of them approach music from different points of view, with Nymus being the live performer and dr.Telsa the DJ. Their favourite artists include the almighty Aphex Twin, Tipper (particularly his Surrounded and Holding Pattern albums), Radioactive Man and pretty much anything Si Begg has ever touched. (And who’s to blame them).

As far as releases go for these guys, they had their first out on Audio Aubergine, a remix of Greg Scrase’s Koko. They followed that up with 2 original productions (and you can really hear the Tipper influences in them) on Audio Aubergine: Postholocen and Vagzeg. Since then (and when MANTIS noticed them I might add) they released the wicked Stractic EP (along with the Stractic Remixed EP) and a remix of label mate DST’s Csillag.

With forthcoming releases on Subgrade (with a stomping remix of Kodek’s Make A Score) and another EP (the Magnet EP) on Digital Distortions these guys just command space in your record box. You’ve heard tracks from them in the show before and it’s with great pleasure that for our 20th show we showcase Nymate Association. Expect bass, glitch, electro, techno and whob.

Prior to that, you had DVNT on the knobs, buttons and faders. Brand new and forthcoming Posthuman remixes on Myuzyk, forthcoming electro breaks sickness from Maschinen Musik with Dr Schmidt and T.R.O., more Myuzyk with Sil-X, Carl Craig, unreleased and frankly awesome Techno from dub_teq and some deep Dubstep vibes from Marytn. As well as a truckload of other loveliness.

We managed to track down Ion Driver from California to provide this weeks showcase. And a belter it is too. Deep broken vibes permeate from within with this excellently programmed mix.

‘While I was growing up I spent a lot of time at a neighbor’s house,’ Bunton recalls. ‘His grandparents would constantly be listening to big band while his mother would be listening to 80’s music; Oingo Boingo was one band that got played constantly, and Men Without Hats. Later when I started skateboarding I was exposed to a whole new world of music through skate videos; bands like Firehose, Chuck Treece, Dead Kennedys, Descendants, and Bad Religion.’

With a pile of remixes that have recently hit all the usual places (including the excellent remix of Irronisch by Charlton out now on Digital Distortions) as well a 4 tracker EP and another soon to drop Ion Driver really should be taking up some of that record box of yours.

In the first hour you had DVNT on the selections and we dished up a right package. Including the huge Phat RiderZ’s Heaven Massacre, new Odan, a new Eskmo remix, some rinsing techno, some deep tech house from the Selph and Wavestream, jacking ghettotech from DJ Slugo and Paul Blackford. You also heard a track from Dan F’s latest LP. Rendition and some AFX 190bpm glitchcore.

Right then. To business. This week we welcome to the showcase, Threnody. A producer making some big waves in the breakstep arena.

Threnody has been producing music since the early 90s with early works centering around an old tascam 4 track, a guitar and a stack of FX. Fast Forwarding to the present day his current sound focusses on deep subs and chopped breaks with avant-garde textures and manipulated sounds exploring the uncertain space between dubstep, breakstep and electronica.

Having received airplay from Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1) and numerous DJs across Sub FM and React FM amongst others, his profile is rising and forthcoming releases on Urban Graffiti, Combat, Creative Space, Dubkraft, Red Volume and Rottun signal the future is set to be big.

Catch Threnody every Thursday at 12-2am on SUB FM. The mix, the mix is simply phat. Looking forward to picking up some of those tunes when they get released.

The first hour, as presented by yours truly DVNT gave up a right mash up of bass, glitchy and breaky treats. Forthcoming Eskmo, Solar Chrome (which got some wicked feedback in the chat I might add), the new net-lab release from Odan and his Aphex acid stylings, as well the huge Redliner with Break the Surface and the soon to be MANTIS anthem, Nagano Kitchen and GSXR8100. I love that tune. Dropped it last night in Farrington at the neuroMANTIS/Centrifuge night.

017 / the SHOWCASE

Being a Brighton based station I reckons this is a wee bit of tribute, but we had none other than Jay Pace on the showcase selection. I caught some of his set at Glade 2006 and we’ve pushed his forthcoming releases and the frankly excellent Jengamaster on show before so it’s only fitting we got him in for a showcase.

Jay fell into techno in the mid nineties, having found his way into dance music through the London rave scene. Together with like-minded people he helped build up a soundsystem, and then establish a regular night, namely: Black Box, which is in its third year down in sunny Brighton. Taking influences from rave, old school techno, and dipping into a host of different sub-genres Jay experiments with different styles to deliver a personal take on a decade of dance music. Now based in Buenos Aires, Jay is focusing on his production, with a release currently out on r3tox and two forthcoming releases on Tyrisia later this year.

Jay’s showcase went down very well with our live listeners. A truly solid techno mix with some meaty surprises. Can see that mix being on rotation in our studios for a while to come.

In the first hour you had DVNT behind the controls and we had served up some tasty forthcoming pieces from Si Begg and iLS (sick remix there) as well as 2 tracks from the new 4 track EP on Subgrade Records, with Kodek. As well as some dubstep heavy weights.

IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY

Can you believe MANTIS is now 1 year old. MANTIS started last May and was a 3 hour monthly show, now we’re a bi-weekly 2hour show and we’re showing no signs of slowing down. It has been a wicked year for us and I am most proud to have been producing such a well received show. We’ve had some seriously amazing showcases from all over the electronic music scene. Each with a leaning to the darker, deeper sounds. A massive thanks to all who have listened in, downloaded, podcasted, sent us abuse through the forums and all those silent listeners. An even bigger thanks to all of the 16 showcased artists, producers and DJs we’ve been so lucky in providing you guys with.
