Bristol based producer Sandy Finlayson turns in an exclusive session mix for Mantis Radio 099. We put a few questions to Duskky late last week for our first interview at Darkfloor (expect more soon).

He had this to say about tonight’s mix:

Well it’s going to be a mixture of speeds and style, mostly from members of Mothers Against Noise and Broken Bubble (the netlabel run by Cogidubnus that’s released a few of my more recent EPs).

Plenty of unreleased stuff generally giving a flavour of what I play on soundsystems plus some more weirdy beardy numbers that I can’t normally get away with! Expect wonky textures and plenty of bass.

Rolling into a new year, maybe our last if you listen to some of the conspiracy nuts and their fervour, tonight Mantis Radio returns to Future Music to broadcast our first show of 2012. With an exclusive session, Death Abyss will be illuminating with their dark mix for the showcase.

We travel from flame to flame. Ruling from the shadows.

A mysterious production entity are Death Abyss. Signed to Birmingham imprint Rodz Konez and with 2 EPs already under their belt, November saw their long awaited debut longplayer for the label be released unto the world.

Rodz Konez artist roster already boasts some fine talent in the form of Makaton, Regis, Inigo Kennedy, The 65D Mavericks, Female, Paul Damage, Max Duley, Datamine, and Tomohiko Sagae. Death Abyss are despite their anonymity, keeping good company.

Back in November, Techno.FM had a discussion with Death Abyss.

As soon as someone tries to create “Techno” then immediately they are setting limitations for themselves. This is an artistic failure, to us anyway. Many people trying to make what they think “Techno” is supposed to sound like, based upon what is currently commercially successful, or en vogue. These people are not artists. If they do not create or contribute then maybe they should be destroyed. Cast out and left to rot.

Their album Dominate Through Will was one of my releases of 2011:

Eleven industrially powered, fractured granite slabs of broken techno, taking in the sonic sub force that some of the better, darker and deeper dubstep cuts have done over the past few years.

Gritty, distorted dank growling electronics assault you like a lazer guided sledgehammer. This is anti-sunshine sound for a mature audience; Come As A Reaper For Thus You Will Sow just one cut from an album of depth, space and thud.

I’d been waiting for this album for many months and when I finally heard it it exceeded my expectations by a mile. Darkfloor through and through.

Show 97. Show. Number. Ninety. Seven. And indeed our final show proper of 2011. This week we welcome back a producer who in the past 18 months has gone from a decade of hard, industrially edged broken techno to boogie funk. Welcome back to Mantis Radio; Brian Gibbs with Echo Park.

As Gunjack, Brian graced our show back in early 2009 (with a double showcase session alongside New York’s Hellfire Machina). His sound has morphed quite dramatically from thundering hard, relentless techno into boogie funk, disco powered hip-hop beats. It’s something different yet again for us here at Mantis Radio and an upbeat send off for our final show of 2011.

2010 was a turbulent year for Brian. With an 8.8 magnitude earthquake his family and he had to content with at his home in Santiago de Chile in February, to August when he was hospitalised for weeks with ruptured internal organs and blood poisoning. Following a month long battle in hospital Brian finally got back to his studio and producing beats. His move from hard edged dark sound had already begun with his Dials Mavis and Marty McFly projects. Slowing down the tempos, bringing swing and space in and producing much less anger powered sound.

As Echo Park, Brian has found support with many, most notably Skream who has already released the much loved Fiber Optic single on his own Disfigured Dubs imprint with an album to follow early next year.

Currently in London for a few weeks to record more material for Disfigured, in between continuing studio sessions in Hammersmith and Hackney, Brian took time out to record an exclusive guest session for our show, which I present tonight.

We’ve showcased several artists from Ireland already this year; Spookhouse, Hoth System and Dublin bred now Berlin based Swarm Intelligence. Numerous tracks from a wealth of talented Irish producers have made the show, one in particular is this weeks showcase guest. Please welcome the superb Sunil Sharpe.

One of Ireland’s most celebrated underground DJs, Sunil Sharpe has been honing his turntable skills since the late 90s, taking to the clubs in late 2000. There he quickly gained a formidable reputation for his quick fire mixing and fast paced sets that were to be heard regularly at clubs across the country and Europe, including an early appearance at Berlin’s legendary Tresor Club in 2001.

Sunil’s popularity has gone beyond the techno scene too, and was further acknowledged this year when he won ‘Best DJ’ at the Irish Dance Music Awards. Sunil has been part of national radio station RTE 2FM’s ‘Late Night Sessions‘ team since 2006 and is also a DJ Techniques tutor at Bray Institute of Further Education, where he has taught since 2005.

Sunil’s many productions have appeared on labels including Tonewrecker, Bastardo Electrico, Labrynth, Mantrap, Takeover, Open Source and others.

His debut Tricaustic release, ‘Caustiphobic Pressure EP‘ (with Jon Hussey) came out on English imprint Komisch last month, while his own ‘BSR03‘ has just been released on another shadowy UK label, Black Sun Records.

Sunil next month appears alongside Ben Sims to remix the Mr Jones track ‘Armory‘, coming out on Heavy Reel. Meanwhile, following the fierce rave-injected 12″ from anodyne earlier this year, Sunil’s Earwiggle label will shortly release Steve Stoll’s first full 12″ in over five years: ‘Hyperrealism Part 3‘.

To say Sunil is busy is doing him a disservice, he’s beyond that. It’s been a journey getting him to record a session for us, though one we’re massively thankful to present tonight.

So we keep it on the Eastern side of Europe this week, following on from the Dutch techno mastery that was Bas Mooy to present a Baltic producer constantly pushing his sonic palette to its limit: oyaarss.

Latvian born and bred oyaarss describes his own music as “lullabies for decadent people“, mainly due to the subtle aftertaste of uneasiness it leaves.

Being a staunch admirer of dystopian novels, post/math-metal, contemporary minimalist music and obscene distortion, has all left a massive footprint in his music, and the only thing you will fail to find in his icy landscapes is a gentle summer breeze. In a very weird way, indeed, it works as a soothing lullaby praising all that is cold, uneasy and eerie, and the heavy industrial harshness is merely a side-effect.

The concept of this studio live-set was to build it entirely out of “remixes” and collaboration tracks by oyaarss, most of them unreleased. This contains remixes for industrial acts (Kaltlicht, Cloaks, Fausten), hardcore/metal bands (Amenra, Kingdom, Tesa), classical music composers (Peteris Vasks, Zbigniew Preisner), as well as other collaboration tracks featuring other artists/bands. However, as one could suspect, this is not going to be a relaxing journey to Bahama beach.

At the moment oyaarss is polishing his début album that will be released early next year on the UK label 3by3, curated by the heavyweight duo Cloaks. His latest digital release The Future Smiling Wryly is available for free download. If you want to catch him on stage, head to Brussels on December 2nd where he will be sharing the stage with Ancient Methods.

Following on from where Perc left us a few weeks ago we’ve huge pleasure in welcoming Bas Mooy to our humble show.

Bas Mooy has been on our showcase shortlist for a while and I’ve little doubt his exclusive session for Mantis Radio is well worth the wait. Based in Rotterdam, since 1999 Bas has been leaving a trail of techno flavoured destruction for all to hear. Heavily influenced by his self-described industrial strength 24-7 city, his dark sound is a stable requirement of many of the world’s finest and respected DJs and clubs.

Together with Jeroen Liebregts of the brutally essential Radial in 2002 Bas opened the floodgates with Audio Assault, one of the go-to labels for industrial hard and dark techno. One year later the sub-label ARMS began its onslaught. Since then both the labels and Bas have consistently delivered.

Bas as a DJ has continues to perform around the world and is a regular at the Dutch Awakenings parties. As a producer his work is never out of favour and finds homes on labels Planet Rhythm, Roots, Fine Audio Recordings, Naked Lunch, Impact Mechanics, Submissions, Patterns, Blank Records together with his own imprints; Audio Assault and ARMS.

Recent releases include his Uniform of the Outsider EP and a joint EP with Exium: Untitled both on Planet Rhythm.

Forthcoming you can expect remixes for H229 on Nachtstrom Schallplatten, Dead Sound on Elektrax, Go Hiyama on Gynoid, and Mutate on Blank Code. He’s more original production work in the pipeline as well including releases for Luke Slater’s Mote Evolver, Perc Trac, Go Hiyama’s Blank, Gynoid, Audio Assault and an upcoming album on his new label Morderstwo. More details on that one soon.

A new CD is planned for March/April release in 2012 AND he’s working on a studio collaboration project with Darkfloor fave Dead Sound. A productive and prolific producer then.

Making a welcome return to Mantis Radio, this week Mad EP is back to dish up his trademark hip-hop infested beat work.

Back in February 2010 Mad EP stepped up to the plate and unleashed a monstrous multi BPM and diverse genre mix exclusively for the show. This week he’s back with a fresh selection of ill sounds. If you’re unfamiliar with Matthew Peters aka Mad EP:

Mad EP is Matthew Peters, Iowa native (formerly based in New York, Chicago + Montreal) and recent UK transplant, with a vast and impressive background in electronic and classical music. Peters brings his talents to bear on Mad EP productions in such a way that the end results are diverse and unclassifiable, calmly defying expectations as he skims through every imaginable genre to reach the outer limits of a territory that is indisputably his own.

Peters has been making his own music, variously described as electronic, alternative hip-hop, breakbeat, avant jazz, classical, sample-mania, and consistently unpredictable, for the past ten years in various contexts. His performances have been experienced in clubs, squats, restaurants, art galleries, concert halls, roof tops, radio studios, theatres, and festivals all over North America and Europe. He has also joined the Sub.FM ranks, and has a monthly show called “Tasty Cyanide Radio” – which goes beyond dubstep & garage and features all bass-centric music. In under a year, his playlists have been hailed as uniquely creative and innovative, and have a cult following to match.

Peters is also the consummate collaborative musician. His releases are full of guest appearances by artists with a deep respect his unparalleled musicality: Shadow Huntaz, Puppetmastaz, Jason Forrest (aka Donna Summer), Math Head, Si Begg, Aaron Spectre, Mochipet, End, DJ Grandtheft, jazz trumpeter David Young, percussionist Bryce Beverlin II, and more. Venetian Snares + Leafcutter John both requested him to appear as a cellist on their albums and Peters is often in demand as a remixer, delivering unexpected, yet mind-blowing results.

A big guest this week in the shape of Ali Wells aka Perc who’ll be live from the Darkfloor HQ in south London.

No doubt any of you with the merest of interest in techno will be aware of who Perc is. An internationally touring DJ and with his debut album Wicker and Steel and a string of on-point tracks behind him, an ever-growing force in production. He also heads up the label Perc Trax which in the past 2 years in my opinion has really found it’s voice delivering consistently high-grade techno workouts with work from Sawf, Forward Strategy group, Perc, Donor / Truss together with heavyweights like Samuli Kemppi guesting.

his rise to prominence has seen him releasing atmospheric drone and premium techno since 2002. It was pretty clear that he was headed for good things when James Holden supported one of his early demos. As usual, Holden wasn’t wrong.

It was in 2007 that things started to get really interesting for Perc as the influential Kompakt took notice releasing Up with a invite to remix DJ Hell’s Buttersäure landing on his lap shortly after. Serving up an industrially fortified techno remix produced yet more interest culminating in remix work for Beyer’s Drumcode and Trentemøller.

He’s played worldwide, from Mexico to Japan to the techno mecca that is Berlin’s Berghain.

Perc’s harddrive brims with tracks including his own productions and armfuls of tools. His sound? It’s a blend of the cream of current techno and choice selections from electronic music’s Birmingham and Detroit forefathers. When it comes to playing live Perc goes deep. He mixes purely his own productions both released and unreleased, reconfiguring them into driving sounds; drone becomes big room techno becomes broken-beat becomes groove. Perc creates DJ and live sets that are industrial landscapes optimized for the dance floor.

Birth name Tony McMurray; Hoth System has been on the Darkfloor radar for literally years, and it’s taken years to lock him down and get a production showcase that will illustrate just how good he can make techno sound. Every few weeks a new track appears and it cements itself as solid focused effort, so much so that I’m never without a few Hoth System cuts in my record box. Hoth has an EP coming out next month on our favourite Hungarian techno netlabel Audioexit and a track on Spain’s Benzel Label and their Conexion vinyl 12″ later this year.

A male/female duo from Southern California; AAIMON defy their sunny locale in exchange for beautiful, grim and sometimes harsh occult soundscapes; with compositions built on anxiety and paranoia giving way to a heightened feverish sexuality and erotic ritualism.

Coming from an extremely wide set of influences, their music is its own unique blend of slow and menacing conjurations. Generally connected with the ‘drag‘ and ‘witchhouse‘ genres, AAIMON uses unconventional sound-design and tension within often pop oriented song structures to instill unnerving sensations.

Up this week I’ve great pleasure in presenting Herd. An artist with a supreme ability for the deep sublime soundscape.

Continuing in a similar vein to his Duck Eye Calm mix Herd returns with another 30 minute soundscape containing more of his ongoing Tangents series, which currently sits at close to 50 tracks.

This journey began on TheMixingbowl where productions pre Herd were uploaded for the members to offer feedback. This feedback helped develop the Herd sound and releases on netlabels FSOR (USA), Bumpfoot (Japan) and Entity (Belgium) followed. Radio exposure in the early days included the legendary Mary Anne Hobbs show for Radio One:

as well as Rob Booth’s Electronic Explorations sixth show. This support waned in the following year leaving Herd time to refine his sound. Fast forward another year and Herd flippantly sends a demo link to The Future Sound of London’s Brian Dougans and is pleasantly surprised to receive a very short but positive reply. Nine frustrating months later – not long in FSOL time – and Tangents 41 – 47 is released on the Future Sound of Londons online label FSOLdigital.

Up this week we welcome to the showcase session an artist who has been at the electronica craft for a while. Dishing out an exclusive hardware session is none other that Global Goon.

His first album Goon saw the light on Rephlex Records back in 1996 whilst he was sharing a house in London with Richard D. James (Aphex Twin), Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher), Chris Jeffs (Cylob) and Grant Wilson-Claridge (who alongside James is responsible for Rephlex). Rumours abounded following his debut release that it was an alias for Aphex Twin, and this persisted still with his Cradle of History release 2 years later.

In the early part of the last decade Johnny left Rephlex to start his own label J-Hok Records where he has released several albums and EPs. I was pretty late to the game with Mr Goon only really getting into his sound after hearing last year’s Earwig album on Myuzyk. In a way to make amends I’ve great pleasure in welcoming his acid heavy electronica flexing to the show.

Yes, we’ve reached that milestone, in fact we very nearly overshot it. As old as we’re getting now we nearly forgot it was our birthday.

As we enter the 5th year of broadcasting the show, we celebrate with a retrospective look at the past years 22 broadcasts, including a run down and 20 minute excerpt from the top 3, most downloaded shows in the past year.

It’s been very close on the old statistics front with not very many separating them. I’ll also be rinsing through some of many tracks I’ve played over the past year, picking out some of my faves.

It is perhaps worth me mentioning that I try to deliver fresh music to each show, so very easily I misplace and genuinely forgot some of the quite awesome sound dropped over the past years archived broadcasts. For our showcase session this week I’ve great pleasure in welcoming the machinations of Scott Robinson.

Returning to production after a considerable break of 8 years, Scott Robinson is back in the studio. Prior to his break he was know for his involvement with London’s Ugly Funk night where he had a captive audience for his twisted techno alongside Subhead, Neil Landstrumm and Tobias Schmidt. He saw his work released through Cluster and Ugly Funk’s own imprint.

Following his return to the studio Scott has a new, ever growing fan base of listeners, mostly due to the work on his Soundcloud together with 2 releases for Russian-Techno (which is where we first heard him here at MANTIS).

Rather than produce single tracks with a clear beginning and end Scott approaches things differently. Recording long studio sessions where he feels the sounds are put into more context allowing him more control over the general feel of his set and where he can push the production technology to its limits, pushing his sound forward. Which is the point of techno after all as he sees it.

His music is an amalgamation of the many genres and styles of techno he has been through since he first started writing music back in ’89. You won’t find a set from him that stays at one level for an hour, rather it will be an adventurous journey thorough perversely dark, dirty shrill sounds and beats always marked with a unique twist of psychedelic off the cuff weirdness that verges on the mentally unstable end of the techno spectrum.

New work is coming out on Russian Techno in the next few weeks as part of the 3rd in the ongoing series of Expanding the Borders (where they look beyond Russian based artists). The first track featured in tonight’s showcase session will see release on our very own DRKFLR label later this year.

Coming up this week we’ve a producer, DJ and label owner I’ve been hankering for a while to get on the show. Digging deep and wide with an awesome exclusive showcase session is the one known as Lifecycle.

Head of independent electro imprint Ricochet Records, Lifecycle has an ever growing reputation from his releases on Londonbreakz, Electrofly, Fluid and Looq for producing compelling records which are hard to categorise. Energy from last century’s rave scene is channelled into deep, dark, progressive electro.

Recent releases have been described by the press as ‘lavishly psychedelic‘, ‘invigoratingly intense‘, ‘on crack‘, ‘tensely unpredictable‘, ‘thinking man’s tear out‘ and ‘a growling, percussive carnival of a warehouse adventure‘.

A full live band is currently out on the road fleshing out new material with a sound that is equally hard to pin down, somewhere between progressive rock, tribal electro and jazz-tinged breakbeat, with a heavy emphasis on improvisation and interplay between each of the group.

Lifecycle has constructed a very special 3 deck mix for the show with new and exclusive bits from himself, Ion Driver and his latest signing to Ricochet: Bownr.

Way back in March 2009 the 33rd Mantis Radio show was broadcast. It’s showcase guest was Vector Commander.

Fast forward to today, May 3rd 2011 and I’ve great pleasure in welcoming back to Mantis Radio Alex Strunz and his Vector Commander alias where once again he’ll be unleashing an hour of his own production work and quite personal take on techno.

Vector Commander is the main project of techno producer and DJ Alex Strunz. He aims to construct techno music without borders but with influence from many other styles. He’s the man behind Extreme Forces, the Brazilian techno label and has been hosting Vector Radio, broadcast on the Canadian based Techno FM for 3 years now. He describes his particular style of techno thus:

My Live PA follows an analogical line inside techno music. Merging Electro, Industrial, and EBM without following rules and formulas, making live interventions the hot spot of my performances.

In my performances, I always use valved electronic drums, effects units and vocoders for live voice recording, sampling and distortion. Using the analogical machinery power along with modern controllers, is the key to show that creativity between software and hardware has no limits

Heading to Dublin, Ireland, we bring you Rob Murphy aka Spookhouse as our showcase guest this week.

It was just 6 years ago in 2005 that Rob began DJing, and since has been a regular fixture for gigs in his native Dublin and further afield in Ireland, including Life Festival, Dublin Electronic Arts Festival and Sibin to name but 3.

He’s supported the likes of Si Begg, Phil Kieran, Dusty Kid, Scanone, Al Tourettes, Kanji Kinetic, Thomas Heckman, Adam Freeland, Duke Dumont, Paul Woolford, the list goes on and on. Rob soon got the production bug with his work being signed to Takeover Records and Digital Distortions as SPOOKHOUSE with releases also on Dublin Xpress and Static Recordings. He’s got future work in the pipeline, forthcoming on Gobsmacked Records. His most recent release: the Flummox EP on Takeover Recordings hit stores on April 13th and is a fantastic introduction to his production ability and followed up his February release on Digital Distortions; Break Yoself Fool!!!

Rob has confirmed he’s working on an album for Takeover due for release later this year which I for one am most excited by. If you like seeing musicians in the flesh, you can catch Rob DJing at Surge Wicklow Wander, Greystones Theatre on April 22nd and at Bigwar 3 at the Twisted Pepper (Dublin) on May 21st. He’ll be performing alongside A Guy Called Gerald, Ceephax Acid Crew, Ed Chamberlain and Fran Harnett. As if he wasn’t busy enough, he’s also been nominated for Best Up + Coming DJ at this year’s Irish Dance Music Awards in June (vote for Rob here).

Thundering forward we arrive at our 81st show and what lies ahead is going to be loud and direct as we’ve a live showcase session going out. Kidchameleon, a producer learning fast and delivering some killer cuts is joined by a long time friend and part time studio partner Casual Breakin’. Together they’ll be laying down a live session broadcast from the darkfloorHQ in south London dishing out their 140bpm jungle heavy bass.

Finding his way from a farm in Suffolk to London to Nottingham and back to London,  KidChameleon‘s first release as a producer came on Hardcore Lives Records back in 2009. Everything Starts With Letters was his tribute to the old skool hardcore of yesteryear. Following it up with remixes for Definition:Breaks and Held II Ransom. Rather than develop a formula, the Kid likes to try something fresh with each new track, injecting where he can a slice of humour. I’ve been warned he’s not afraid of sheep noises.

He’s nurturing his style at On A Break after remixing Walking on Water by Enough Weapons. Already 2011 is shaping up to be a productive year, 3 EPs are lined up for release and his forays into jungle have caught the attention of the mighty Mulder.

Casual Breakin’, Jim to his Mum started DJing (badly) way back when in ’92 alongside John Grief (the man responsible for Definition:Breaks) who was responsible for getting him into jungle.

He’s played many an illegal rave as well as regular appearance at established club nights Spectrum; Nottingham’s Detonate and Ambus. Casual has been a stalwart on the award winning NSB Radio since it’s very early days giving Chris Screwface some of his early airtime, debuting breakbeat classics such as Flesh Eater.

When not gigging he can be found spending his days in the Peckham Zoo Studio with KidChameleon.

For the 80th show we go deep with the production work of Pleq as our showcase guest

Bartosz Dziadosz is a Warsaw based producer, gathering increasing attention as his production alias Pleq; an experimental musician who combines elements of drone, down tempo, glitch IDM and modern classical. Creating his work by fusing together independently synthesized sounds, often incorporating violin, the unexpectedly melancholic sound of a piano, together with occasional female vocal.

Somewhere, something falls, something enters, rings there’s a hissing and pop, like a short circuit on high voltage lines.

His sound is perhaps best described as melancholic glitch. He’s focused, prolific and from what I’ve heard of his back catalogue so far, damn consistent. He’s produced a very special and exclusive selection for the showcase session.

Following closely behind the work of Dead Sound and VideoHead as DVF we continue with techno for our 79th showcase; bringing to the guest session Black Smith Craft.

Born in the North of France, Tyler Smith aka Black Smith Craft discovered acid house at the end of the 80’s. Seduced and consumed by electronic music he fell in love (like many of us did) with the German melodic trance style of labels such as Eye-Q, Platipus + Superstition. By the late 90s he’d started DJing and by the turn of the new millennium his tastes had developed into a more underground techno sound influenced by English, German and especially Detroit sounds. His radio career kicked off in earnest with Tyler appearing regularly on Tuesday Session show broadcast on Campus FM (Villeneuve d’Ascq/France) which was run by Dimitri Pike (Mirage/Matrix/Subject Detroit).

2006 saw Tyler’s debut vinyl release – a collaboration with Bionic on German label Audiocrash was quickly followed by several digital releases. Over the years Tyler’s sound has become darker and more industrial resulting in the Black Smith Craft project. He has releases on Grovskopa’s mighty Pohjola, Leeds’ finest Limetree and Rednox’s superb free netlabel Ante-Rasa with more due for 2011.

A prolific radio DJ with many shows running concurrently with his B-Side radio sessions (broadcasting on Livesets radio every three months on Monday from 21.00CET) being the one you darkfloor fans should take the most note of.

Due to illness, the last time Mantis Radio went on air was a month ago. I’m pretty confident the strength of this weeks mix will more than make up for our extended absence.

Back in April 2010 I invited Dead Sound to lay down a showcase mix for the 60th show. By all accounts it was a great session. Since then I’ve been continually impressed by the production, arrangement and shear awesomeness of his production work. For the 78th show I’ve invited his collaborative project DVF to the showcase session.

Dead Sound + VideoHead aka DVF is a project between 2 friends using hardware and software to produce and perform live.

Dead Sound creates the beats, percussion, FX and bass using a laptop together with several midi controllers whilst fellow partner in crime VideoHead overlays more beats, percussion and FX using 2 Korg drum machines and a Korg Kaoss mixer. Most of what you’ll hear is produced on the fly, live.

With Dead Sound coming from a more techno/house background together with VideoHead‘s more IDM and glitch history the 2 producers meet somewhere in the middle resulting in a fantastic sounding effort that I for one hope to see live someday. Until then this exclusive mix lovingly titled as the Crack Ya Skull Mix will have to do.

Stylewise they’re varied but they come in pretty hot on the darkfloor thing. Taking in bits from dubstep to broken beat and IDM with most of the growing attention focused on their industrial techno take on things. Presently signed to Perc Trax with a remix of Go Hiyama’s Postmodern already out and garnishing them with support from Dave Clarke, Bas Mooy, Surgeon, Sawf, Perc and myself here at darkfloorHQ. They’ve a DVF EP coming out in the next few months.

I’ve been after Blackmass Plastics for some time, and there are few better ways to open a new year than with the almighty power that Blackmass Plastics unleashes with his production work. Synonymous with future thinking, heavy bass driven snarling machine funk, rampant with the spirit of fierce hardcore and early rave.

Blackmass Plastics takes his experiences of 80s electro, industrial and 90s raves into his laboratory spawning often tense, always hard edged and futuristic beasts. His sound is uniquely his, full of breakbeats, electro and 2step influence, multi-genre carnage. He is for want of a better term, pure darkfloor sound.

He’s had support from John Peel on BBC Radio One as well as on the BBC World Service and he continues to receive support from underground stations like Rinse FM, Pulse Radio and Resonance FM and of course our very own Mantis Radio.

His tracks have been in my record bag ever since I first heard him back in 2006 with his Four Aces EP on Rag & Bone Records. It’s taken nearly 4 years to get him on the show, and believe me, it’s worth the wait. He’s put together a unique and exclusive showcase mix for us, with some 31 of his unreleased tracks let loose.

It’s the final Mantis Radio broadcast of 2010. Generally it’s been a good year here at darkfloorHQ. Personally the year started off on a bit of downer, and as most people it’s had some blips, at times major ones, but overall, things are on the up.

The show remains popular, the darkfloor site is busier and 2011 is shaping up with some quality showcases already lined up. A lot of radio shows around this time of year like to do a retrospective of the year, and whilst I technically could do that, there are just so many fresh new bits I wanna play I don’t have the space.

All the shows are of course tracklisted, archived and made available to download or stream if you fancied digging through the past years efforts. I might do a 2010 retrospective studio mix if I get a chance.

Speaking of showcases as I was but a few lines ago, for our final showcase of the year I’m very happy to present Vocode Records.

Vocode Records is the offshoot of the long running Vocode Project, documenting the evolution of electro since 1999. The label philosophy is to release electronic music in all its forms, as long as its kopfnicken (which I think translates as head nodding). Expect to see releases in a variety of genres, but primarily in electro-bass with breakbeat grooves. Vocode Records currently operates as a netlabel licensed by creative commons guidelines.

Vocode is tended with loving care by DJ Mad Wax.

In the showcase this week, we’ve the impressive techno force that is Inigo Kennedy.

To say I’m rather pleased with myself to have snared Inigo Kennedy for the show would be an understatement. I’ve been massively impressed by his techno prowess over the past couple of years, be they his impressively direct and focused yet musically developed mixes and sets, his dancefloor slaying productions or his commitment to his netlabel and label Asymmetric. On November 29th Inigo has his latest release out on the always on point Token Records as a limited edition green marbled 12? vinyl offering (with a digital release too so don’t worry). By all accounts it’s a hefty bomb and one of the techno releases of the year.

His productions are always pushing techno forward, leaving formulaic beats at the door, but without some sort of bizarre confusing lacklustre and ultimately weak sound. Quite the opposite in fact, as a case in point I present his most recent release, and my own short review, on his Asymmetric label: Magnificent Spaces. With continuing worldwide presence in the clubs of Japan, Britain, Slovakia, Hungary, China, Ireland amongst many more, Inigo Kennedy is thundering forward with superb proper techno.

He has a quite comprehensive biography up on his site, giving a good insight into his journey so far with music, so I won’t even try to condense it down, I’ll just say, read it and go see him perform.

Show 73 is upon us, and coming in hot this week we’ve fresh blood on the scene: 8Bitch. Coinciding with her début release for the Seed Records we’ve an exclusive mix from Maya Medvesek aka 8Bitch aka Nightwave.

Originally of Slovenian descent but splitting her time between Glasgow and London, she’s part of the second wave of talented producers to come out of Scotland alongside the likes of Hudson Mohawke, Runrig, Floella Benjamin and Rustie.

Her track G41 already finding it’s way on Ministry of Sound’s ‘Adventures In Dubstep and Beyond’ compilation and with a heavy touring schedule – where she’s everywhere from Copenhagen to a public toilet in Shepherd’s Bush – big things are expected for this producer.

It was her upcoming release on Seed Records, ‘Equinox‘ that got the cogs turning at Mantis Radio HQ. So impressed was I by her 4 track EP I had to invite her onto the show.

If you want to get your hands on her EP, be quick, this is strictly limited edition, with just 250 hand numbered 12?s available, released November 29. (more info over at Seed Records)

Mythical in stature, the tunes are all named after Greek and Egyptian gods and goddesses, but for god’s sake don’t read too much into that, all you really need to know is there is more flavouring in 8Bitch’s aural oeuvre than Levi Roots’ Reggae Reggae Sauce bubble bath which may yet be proven to be the original source of her fated digital disfigurement. Musician since the age of 5, Penelope Cruz’s stunt double since the age of 6, Ronnie Corbett’s from the age of 7, plus three times Judo champ in her homeland, is there nothing that the 8Bitch can’t turn her hand to?  I say hand, because her left hand is actually made from plastic and therefore doesn’t count.  Next time you meet her, look closely.  It’s amazing.

A diverse producer of the electronic beats is T-Polar’s Gary Spence, make no mistake. He’s in the showcase guest mix this week, for our 72nd Mantis Radio broadcast.

T-Polar has had a long journey through electronica of many shades, from the microhouse stylings of early releases on Takeover Recordings, Morris Audio, and Karloff, to more ambient fare as sitizen on Acroplane, to his gnarly, and at times woozy, post rave music on Nice&Nasty, Digital Distortions, WIDE, L2S, and again Takeover. Recent productions have found their way into sets from Surgeon, Rob Hall and Instra:mental.

He’s put together a very special mix exclusively for us, delving into his 7+ years of production to give up a retrospective of his work. Essential listening, even if we do say so ourselves.

It’s official, we are a pensioner in the world of radio. We’ve reached the grand old age of 70 shows. A huge thank you to the continued support of all you listeners out there. To celebrate hitting the milestone we’ve got an amazing producer in, providing an exclusive showcase guest mix.

Defekt aka Irish electro fiend Matt Flanagan is hitting up the second hour of the show. Celebrating his début album release Stimulus. Which is just awesome from start to finish. Don’t just take my word for it. He’s been gathering support from the likes of Dexorcist, Dave Clarke, Keith Tucker (Aux88), with the album being dubbed “a future classic” by the mighty Scape One. It really is something else. If you like the cold electro bump of artists like Silicon Scally and early Anthony Rother you’re going to lap this up.

He’s put together a Serato based set composed of his own tracks, as DeFeKT, ESS (Electronic Speech Systems) and L-System (a collaborative project with Ken Hearte aka Grizzle). Utilizing heavy use of modular synthesis through, DeFeKT production ability is accomplished, deep, and sharp. His work as ESS and L-system are recorded as live jams.

The LP is out now on the Irish Takeover Recordings with an accompanying limited 12? featuring 4 of the most essential cuts from the album. His rather fine remix of Rogue Frequency‘s Forgotten Secrets from the Dark Technologies EP, also on Takeover Recordings is not long out. And with a further DeFeKT track on Exakt‘s Electro Endeavour mix/compilation LP on Bass Frequency Productions, DeFeKT is a name that is going to remain synonymous with superbly produced electro for some time to come.

BOOM! The 69th show is incoming, this Sunday we’re broadcasting another 2 hours of quality sound abuse. In the showcase slot this week, is the Bristol bass specialist: Sclist.

I’ve been trying to get Sclist on the show for a long time. I first heard his music in late 2008/early 2009 and his latest work (reviewed here) just continues to cement his production ability in my ears.

After moving from Germany to Bristol back in 2002, Sclist got literally sucked into the Bristol music scene and soon started DJ’ing (something he had wanted to do since his early teens).

It all began at ‘Aurally Funked‘, a club night at Bristol’s Timbuk2, where he was playing mainly breaks and house. He would later co-promote a night called ‘Launch’, primarily aimed to showcase local producers. It was here that he met Phaeleh label owner of Urban Scrumping and a fan of Sclist‘s production dexterity.

Drawing his inspiration from techno-influenced dubstep and dark, glitchy electro breaks, for him it’s all about glitchy percussion and warped bass – chilled or rather filthy.

His recent tunes go anywhere between mellow 2-step to dark breakstep, and his productions are always guaranteed to detonate any dancefloor.

Presently, Sclist is resident at Byte, a monthly, Bristol-based club night, still playing anything from chunky plod to techno and breaks.

It’s the 67th show people, and this week, not 1, but 2 showcases, both of which are on an experimental hardware techno tip.

Rabid Gravy is a project of the South London musician Jonathan Stowe. Jonathan has been making music for more than thirty years and for most of that time has been an experimenter and improviser, influenced by all the waves of underground music that have passed in that time, with an eye on the wealth of experimental music of the twentieth century.

The sound of Rabid Gravy is best described as noise with beats in it, forged with a hand selected set of real instruments rather than software, making each performance and recording unique.

Sturqen are César Rodrigues and David Arantes, a duo from Portugal. Their music explores a vast amount of sonic rhythmic sound where as they put it:

a techno-trance universe is combined with a constant noise attitude

Sturqen’s first album Piranha was released on Ukrainian label Kvitnu in 2009. This year, they followed that with the digitally released Peste EP also on Kvitnu.

The music on their showcase, is a mix between released and unreleased stuff. 100% analog sound.

Coming up this week, we welcome back Mr Seavers who’s heading down to the studio for an exclusive live performance.

Back in the UK for a brief pitstop while international living arrangements readjust, we present Mr Seavers. Formerly one of the resident DJs with Pure Filth, the regular club night of Nottingham’s Dagobah soundsystem, Mark is a long standing friend of Mantis Radio, being the showcase DJ for 3rd ever show and also holding the dubious accolade of hosting the only show which has not been obsessively and compulsively tracklisted for podcast. Though he would like to add that all blame for that lies with Robin Marsden.

Mark was a regular in the East Midlands free party scene for a long time, playing in all sorts of weird and wonderful locations. From the Yorkshire moors to various warehouses and squats around the Nottingham area, he also played most club venues in the city at the time, playing alongside all sorts of people from Chris Liberator to Si Begg to Plaid to the Plump DJs.

Moving to London in 2006, he’s played various warehouse parties in the Hackney area, plus a one off night at The Big Chill House with Phantom Beats (where they actually pulled the power on him for playing One Night in Hackey), and the occasional appearance for Under the Stairs at the 333 in Shoreditch. He’s always doing his best to push the boundaries of what it’s acceptable to play in a respectable establishment, and is finally showing signs of pulling his finger out and actually finishing something he’s started producing. Watch this space.

We thought we better catch him before he returns to India to devote his time trying to convince the population that there is music beyond Hip Hop, Commercial House and Psytrance. Best of luck with that.

Yea, the past few shows have been slightly on the sporadic, in so much as it’s been 4 weeks since the last show. I can only apologise for that. July has been a very busy month for me and family functions (including the christening of my spiffingly awesome niece) do have to take priority to me pushing some noisy bollocks through the internets. Mind you, quite a few quality mixes have been going up on darkfloor.co.uk. With that said, this week, we’re back with one hell of a showcase, from producer: Mazzula.

the SHOWCASE

“There isn’t a scene for my music in Stoke”

Living in what might be called a ‘cultural void’ as far as dance music is concerned, has only further inspired Paul ‘Mazzula’. Treading the line between electro breaks and techno, recognition has been growing steadily with artists such as Radioactive Man and Dave Clarke supporting.

The current Alive EP is winning Mazzula many plaudits, and is a fitting follow up to earlier, well-received releases on Data-Trace and Bassgun. 2010 is shaping up to be busy, with him working with i-o inc, and Digital Distortions, along with another EP on Data-Trace later in the year.

Known for his livesets, this showcase is a good example of what to expect. Never doing things the easy way, Mazzula’s ethic means his tracks are blown open when played live, and all are different interpretations of the full released tracks, broken down into component parts and re-stitched for full impact.

“I enjoy playing out, and can’t see the point of djing my own tracks. I want as much out of it as the audience.”

OK, first off. Big apologies for the lame and low microphone levels during the first half hour of the broadcast. Secondly, how good was Ed’s set?!

Not sure… download it now then and confirm it for yourself. Oh yea, and thirdly the delay in this archive hitting the internet tubes… usual story, work has got on top of me a bit. Also this week: bit of a minimix from Dessben‘s latest release, which it has to be said, it is just stunning. Broken techno and then some. He’s been experimenting with broken rhythms in his productions since he started hearing dubstep on this very show. Awesome stuff indeed. Anyways, without further babbering…

the showcase

Ed Devane is a Dublin-based artist primarily working with sound. As a producer he is known for releases on a variety of electronic labels, while most recently he released his debut album Molten Membrane (on Mantrap Recordings)

a daring trip through ambient, hip hop tempo melancholy, dub, industrial and into the fiercer chest-shaking attacks that have become his trademark.

His interest in sound design has in recent years led him to build his own instruments, including a homemade zither, which was used throughout the recording of Molten Membrane.

When not making music Ed also helps in the running of Second Square to None (events, label, blog, audiovisuals)

Coming up this week I’m very happy to present Ventolyn + Becotyde.

the showcase

Ventolyn + Becotyde aka Rubble Digits is a young man from the rainy city of Galway, Ireland. Originally a drummer, he started creating tracks in early 2008, highly influenced by the music he was surrounded by growing up. To date, he has made all his productions available for free, 2 albums and an EP, which have been released on netlabels: Section 27, Pavillion 36, Stasis Records, Engine Of Saturation, Bumpfoot, Ideation and the label he founded, Alkalinear.

His music is meticulously constructed detailed sound. Part sound design, part dancefloor, all good. The music is both abstract and challenging and yet accessible and beautiful at the same time. Generally speaking his sound could be classed as IDM, but that is doing V&B a disservice, as his music encompasses a range of styles and disciplines.

Making music is the only way I can happily and accurately express myself.

Rather than a quest for originality, my interest lies in creating music that means something to me personally, which is very much down to the sounds I have been submersed in since I was young…. I’m all about the nostalgia.’

We’re back and this time we mean business. Coming up this week, Posthuman, live from the studio.

Ahead of the new album, Syn Emergence (coming this summer on Balkan Vinyl) Posthuman headed down to the Mantis Radio studios to give up a unique and exclusive live performance.

Posthuman is cousins Richard Bevan and Joshu Doherty. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland and London, England.

Their style is unrestricted by genre moving from techno, electro, and breaks, to post-rock, IDM, and ambient. However, their overall signature sound is often dark, brooding and melancholic.

Their debut release in 2000 was a series of hand made CDs simply called “Posthuman” (though better known by the colour of the card inserts – grey, black, blue and brown) which were sold at live shows and via Rough Trade and Smallfish Records in London. The duo then went on to host a number of parties in an abandoned underground train station in London between 2001 and 2004, and founded their own label Seed Records with which they released 3 albums and several other releases of their own and other artists material. They also were the first act on Manchester based electronica label Skam on their SMAK series.

Doherty left Seed Records to help relaunch UK techno imprint B12 Records in 2006, and now runs London clubnight ‘I Love Acid‘. He also is a member of modern classical / electronica crossover outfit Digitonal, and rave / hardcore breaks duo AGT Rave Cru.

Seed Records continues under the stewardship of Bevan and long time collaborator Bruce McClure, whose spoken word pieces feature extensively throughout Posthuman’s output.

Well here we are, at the big 60. Kicking it out on the showcase this week, Dead Sound. Be sure to listen in and let us know what tracks you’re feeling through the chatroom.

Paul Carroll is the man behind the Dead Sound project, a project involving underground techno/electro/dubstep and broken beat techno which he has been working on for the past year after putting his earlier alias ‘Digital Filth’ to rest and has quickly gained him support from top and varied artists including Dave Clarke, Surgeon, James Ruskin, Stormfield and Warlock.

Paul has been playing out live with his own material at underground club nights around the UK most notably Atomic Jam at The Q Club (Nov 09). Paul has also played in top underground techno clubs in Germany that only the locals and people ‘in the know’ knew about including ‘The Villa’ in Berlin and ‘Tranz Hause’ in Hamburg where his hybrid of techno/electro beat went down a storm.

Now concentrating on a new way of playing live using segments of loops from the mass of work produced, usually around 4 loops at a time, in the same vein as Richie Hawtin’s DE9, but all original material. His live sets that are always different, crammed with diverse underground music. Paul’s DJ sets include fast mixing, turntablism. and variety and now using Serato Scratch he’s able to mix his down material in the same vein as DJing, but with the originality of a live set.

SmashBack spent his teenage years in North London training his ears to the evolving sounds of Jungle and House.

His love for underground music led to further training in the art of music production, working various jobs to buy music equipment for his bedroom studio. It wasn’t until he left school when he got into DJing, starting a weekly residency at The Green Man pub in London’s West End. From there, he studied Music Technology at Uni + spent one of his summer breaks working at the now defunct techno institute Prime Distribution in West London. Whilst at Uni, he co-ran the legendary Bulldozer night in the seaside town of Scarborough. It was at least nights that SmashBack introduced the North East coast to Grime, Electro & Booty Bass.

After moving to Manchester, SmashBack got involved with the early stages of the Electrode night, which was to introduce him to the residents of Alien Radio, who asked him to hop aboard and help co-run their night. Electrode now fills the monthly slot that Alien Radio use to grace.

Alongside Paul Blackford, SmashBack co-runs the Bass Gun record label, releasing quality bass-heavy electro. Last year he released the album City Parks, which allowed him to move away from pure dancefloor bombs and develop and experiment with sound. A few weeks ago he released a joint EP with fellow Electrode member Teutonic Kaboom on the Bassgun imprint with some impressive remixes.

Subeena is 24 years old producer Sabina Plamenova, originally from Italy via Germany with Bulgarian roots, now based in London where she studies a Music and Media degree.

Subeena was included in a special feature dedicated to women in electronic music called ‘X chromosome‘ by Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1, where she showcased her own special sound on the airwaves amongst other producers such as Ahu, Vaccine, Cooly G, Ikonika and more.

Her productions have also had wide support amongst internationally renowned producers such as Skream, Boxcutter, Vaccine, Mrs Jynx, Jay Scarlett, Mike Slott, Tes La Rok, Dave Q from Dub War and many more.

Her work was initially mainly included in the “dubstep” niche, however it has quickly evolved and has become more diverse, crossing over various “electronic music” genres but at the same time not losing that distinct sound in which Subeena began experimenting with.

She runs a monthly 2 hour radio show on Sub.FM called ‘Outland’ which includes guest mixes from producers from across the globe.

Sabina took part at the latest Red Bull Music Academy held in Barcelona in autumn 2008, where she collaborated with artists such as UK singer-songwriter Jamie Woon, Mexican producer Pepepe and MC and producer Violet who she also included in her new EP, and with studio team Osborne and Om Mas Keith (Sa-Ra).

The collaboration with Jamie Woon and Om ‘Mas Keith– “Solidify” is included in the Various Assets CD that the Academy releases every year and that features the productions made during the two Terms; it was also released on Planet Mu Records in October ’09.

Featured on one of the past editions of the free DVD Slices together with producer Dot, who she has been co-running her own record label ‘Imminent Recordings’ (formerly known as ‘Immigrant Recordings’) for a year and a half.

Following on from the serious sound workout of Coefficient‘s techno and electro showcase we continue with the techno, taking it a touch deeper for the Drugstore collective…

Drugstore began at the beginning of 2009 as a union of the Bayona Music Collective. One name, six people, one target, six visions of techno music. This is what Drugstore are, one group, able to release a range of styles from tech-house to schranz music.

Always in the same line, our line. Our music always get in touch with techno lovers, always groove, some dark and some industrial sounds, very mental.

In their first year of working collectively together as Drugstore they’ve released tracks and mixes for several net labels around Europe: Offaudio (SPA), Antiritmo (SPA), Ignored Records (SPA), Zimmer (GER), Subversive Media (SPA), Loopzilla (GER) Mixotic (GER).

They been supported, reviewed and played by DJs and producers of the electronic music scene from all over the world. Including Dosem [Sino!] (SPA), Nuke [Code Records] (SPA), Exium [Nheoma] (SPA), Bas Mooy [Audio Assault] (NED), A.Paul [Naked Lunch] (POR), DVNT [MANTIS] (UK).

Their tracks and sets have been played in radio shows and stations from Spain to United Kingdom, at Sonidos Distintos (SPA), Mantis (UK), Dirty Radio (UK) and Wavesound FM (CZ).

Over the course of the past year they’ve shared the stage with Mark Broom, James Ruskin, Adam Beyer, Octave One, Ben Sims, Cristian Varela, Exium, Mark Williams, Reeko, Nuke and Cesar Almena as well as regular slots at CODE @ Fabrik, TABOO, MAMBO House Club and PASARELLA.

Coefficient is a mysterious London producer and DJ. He has had releases on Labrynth of Portugal and the Italian M_Rec Ltd. What little details there are surrounding Coefficient amount to: that he began the project in 2006 and with michaelangelo of Labrynth produces as Telesthesia (exclusively vinyl only released offbeat techno); and that he describes his music as being dark, hypnotic, industrial and experimental techno.

The electro/experimental project of one Sorin Pau; Datacrashrobot‘s story begins in early 2008, influenced by the classic electro sound, he started producing tracks which he describes as

following a journey into the cold, mechanical, information overloaded mind of robots. The beat is drowned in dark ambiance or broken and twisted, overloaded with effects and glitches creating a state of malfunction and collapse.

Logical Disorder is the name of the therapy that Javier Barrero use to balance his sinusoidal sense of duty. He develops his sounds focusing on ambient and post industrialism, remembering as he puts it

Mad EP is Matthew Peters, Iowa native (formerly based in New York, Chicago + Montreal) and recent UK transplant, with a vast and impressive background in electronic and classical music. Peters brings his talents to bear on Mad EP productions in such a way that the end results are diverse and unclassifiable, calmly defying expectations as he skims through every imaginable genre to reach the outer limits of a territory that is indisputably his own.

Peters has been making his own music, variously described as electronic, alternative hip-hop, breakbeat, avant jazz, classical, sample-mania, and consistently unpredictable, for the past ten years in various contexts. His performances have been experienced in clubs, squats, restaurants, art galleries, concert halls, roof tops, radio studios, theatres, and festivals all over North America and Europe. He has also joined the Sub.FM ranks, and has a monthly show called ‘Tasty Cyanide Radio‘ – which goes beyond dubstep & garage and features all bass-centric music. In under a year, his playlists have been hailed as uniquely creative and innovative, and have a cult following to match.

Peters is also the consummate collaborative musician. His releases are full of guest appearances by artists with a deep respect his unparalleled musicality: Shadow Huntaz, Puppetmastaz, Jason Forrest (aka Donna Summer), Math Head, Si Begg, Aaron Spectre, Mochipet, End, DJ Grandtheft, jazz trumpeter David Young, percussionist Bryce Beverlin II, and more. Venetian Snares + Leafcutter John both requested him to appear as a cellist on their albums and Peters is often in demand as a remixer, delivering unexpected, yet mind-blowing results.

Kicking of the new year and new decade 2 weeks later than originally planned, I’ll be sure to make up for it. For our 53rd and the 1st showcase of the new decade I’m very happy to present Full Spektrum.

South London based producer Full Spektrum has been making music since around 2003. A bit of an old skool raver, he got into Hardcore and Jungle around ’92-‘93. Later producing his own music, a progression through D+B and garage eventually led to Full Spektrum being introduced to the ever varying sounds of Dubstep.

The deep and versatile nature of the music suited his own productions, and it wasn’t long before he was fusing the sounds of Dubstep and Old Skool with his own trademark rolling breaks. He has received a lot of support from other producers and DJ’s in the scene including Elemental, Warlock, Blackmass Plastics, Noiz, ID, Threnody, Rob Booth and the Urban Graffiti crew.

With releases currently out on labels Bankai, UK Trends, Militant Science and Urban Scrumping and forthcoming tracks on Furioso and Mata-Syn, Full Spektrum is a producer with a big sound.

The final broadcast of 2009. It’s been a great year for electronic music, particularly the stuff of a darkfloor nature. To see off the year in style, for our 52nd showcase, direct from the Russian Federation: Vadz.

Vadz born Vadim Savchenko in Taganrog, South of Russia in 1980. Whilst growing up Vadz found he could express himself with painting and photography and by age 15 had realised that in music he’d found his calling. At the very beginning,

there were no parties, records or techno; I was just looking for a way to express my non-ordinaries

It was his non-standard view of simple things that provided his conception of musical originality and independence. That was the beginning. From school discos, to local parties, it led to records, synthesizers and sending hordes of demos, to releases, and gigs all over Russian and beyond.

Currently Vadz has 4 physical releases (Television Records and LaBrat Audiochemicals) and an ever growing amount of digital releases (WIDE, Digital Distortions, Militant Science etc… check his discography). His releases are supported by loads of Russian techno DJs, as well as international names like Dave Clarke, Radioactive Man, Mark Hawkins, Shelley Parker.

Vadz is devoted to (as he describes it) fat ‘proper’ techno and electro styles that use to rock the dancefloors in late 90s and early zeros. No shuffle-trank minimal, no youngsters-on-speed schranz.

In late 2007 Vadz set up the Russian-Techno.com netlabel to show the world the power and quality of his native producers’ output with good, original and interesting music.

Hot on the heels of the 50th show (with Wu-Tang – Enter the Dubstep), this week we have the Berlin based producer T.R.O.

the showcase

After growing up in Bayreuth (the Richard Wagner town) T.R.O. moved to Berlin, diving head first into it’s techno scene. Soon after, he became interested in the much smaller but very friendly local breaks scene, especially the legendary Dangerous Drums nights.

Now addicted to this sound, his own productions changed from techno to breakbeat, too. In 2004 his début release “Rec” appeared on the Dangerous Drums compilation ‘It’s a Berlin thing 3‘ and in 2005 he got the first of several tracks signed on Dr. Schmidt’s label Maschinen Musik (Dr. Schmidt and his label were featured on Mantis 008).

While he still enjoys the full range of breakbeat music, increasingly he’s become interested in other broken beat styles, primarily dubstep and garage and their influence is being absolved into his productions.

T.R.O.’s own label Furioso is dedicated to the idea of merging breaks, dubstep, 2step, and bassline house. With artists like Sharps, Blackmass Plastics, KingThing, and Nicolas Bourbaki it has quickly become a melting pot for future bass music.

To celebrate the milestone of having broadcast 50 shows, this week we have a very special broadcast.

In 2005 the Wu-Tang released Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 1, and Mantis Radio are ecstatic to have an exclusive mix of the follow up Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture Vol. 2: Enter The Dubstep.

Headed up by previous Mantis Radio guests, Hellfire Machina, this release is huge.

As Vol. 1 sought to introduce hip-hop fans in general, and specifically, the famously large, loyal and diverse fan-base of the Wu-Tang to the burgeoning world of underground hip-hop, so Vol. 2 seeks to expose another untapped resource of underground talent, skill and artistry to this very same avid and intrepid fan-base.

The project serves a double purpose as well: many of the pioneers and practitioners (DJ’s and producers) in the Dubstep world came up in a time when Wu-Tang ruled the international airwaves. Unlike much commercial hip-hop, the immediacy of Wu-Tang’s sound spoke to many outside of the scope of the typical hip-hop fan, across oceans and at home. Their music and style helped to shape an emerging artform that hadn’t yet defined itself. Now, in 2009, as dubstep continues to grow, expand and encompass more styles and subgenres, the Wu-Tang sound is reintroduced into the mix, to spawn a new and unique musical crossbreeding, that is greater than the sum of its constituent parts.

This groundbreaking album is trail-blazing the collaboration between Dubstep and Hip-Hop, with stomach-pounding, bass-thumping guttural beats, and gully, gritty and grimy lyrics that break into the next decade in the chapters of each respective genre’s history. With Scuba, Parson, Trillbass, Dakimh, DZ, Rogue Star, Stenchman, Datsik & many more producing not remixes, but complex re-interpollations that include a veritable goldmine of Wu-Tang verses from the vaults that feature Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, RZA, GZA, Method Man, U-God & Masta Killa, Wu affiliates Killah Priest, Bronze Nazareth, Prodigal Sunn, Solomon Childs, Son One + more, and guest spots from Busta Rhymes, MF Doom, Pimp C, Three 6 Mafia, Ras Kass, Vast Aire, Canibus, Lord Jamar + many more, this one of a kind compilation is at the forefront of an emerging cultural and musical blend that is taking place on the margins of the mainstream.
